Mechanics of Deformable Bodies Lecture 3

The document discusses the torsion of circular shafts, which is the twisting caused by a moment about the object's longitudinal axis, known as torque. It highlights the importance of torsional loads in engineering applications, such as axles and shafts for power transmission. Additionally, it includes problems related to calculating shear stresses and required diameters for shafts under specific conditions.

TORSION OF CIRCULAR

SHAFTS
-Is the twisting of an object caused by a moment acting about
the object’s longitudinal axis.
- Is a type of deformation.
- A moment which tends to cause twisting is called TORQUE.
In many engineering applications, members are required to carry
torsional loads.
AXLE – transmit power from the engine of a car to the wheels and
SHAFTS to transmit power from the blades of wind turbine to its
generator.

SOLID AND HOLLOW

Prob.1 : The fig. shows a 2 in diameter solid steel cylinder that is built into
the support at C and subjected to the torques Ta and Tb.

a.) Determine the max. shear stresses in segments AB and BC.

b.) Compute the angle of rotation of end A.
Use G= 12 x 10^5 psi for steel.
Prob.2 :
Prob.3 :
Prob.4 : A solid steel shaft AB shown is to be used to transmit 5hp from
the motor M to which it is attached. If the shaft rotates at 𝝎 = 𝟏𝟕𝟓 𝒓𝒑𝒎
and the steel has an allowable shear stress of 𝝉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘 = 𝟏𝟒. 𝟓 𝒌𝒔𝒊,
determine the required diameter of the shaft to the nearest 1/8 in.
