VALIDATION OF PERFORMANCE
CHARACTERISTICS OF WEIGHING BALANCE.
Introduction

Weighing balances are essential tools in various fields, including research,


manufacturing, and quality control. The accuracy and reliability of these
instruments are crucial for ensuring the quality of products, the validity of
experimental results, and compliance with regulatory standards. Therefore, it is
essential to perform regular validation of weighing balances to confirm that they
are functioning correctly and meet the required performance criteria.

Method of validation to ensure they provide accurate and reliable


measurements

PROCEDURE:

Before starting of the verification of weighing balances ensure the


following.

That the Balance has been kept “ON” for at least for 30 minutes before
starting the activity.

Ensure that the balance is properly cleaned.

CLEANING PROCEDURE FOR WEIGHING BALANCE

 Clean spilled material with help of cotton cloth before any weighing.
 After performing each weighing process, clean the balance pan and
surrounding with cotton cloth.
 If required clean the balance with lint free moistened cloth with 70%
isopropyl: water mixture. Ensure that the mixture is not spilled on
the balance.

CLEANING PROCEDURE FOR STANDARD WEIGHTS

 Before calibration take out weights and clean them with lint free
cloth moistened with 70 % Isopropyl alcohol mixture. Leave weight
to air dry.
 After cleaning, place them back in poly bag covers. Frequency: once
in a month.
CALIBRATION:This is done to adjust the balance reading to match a
known standard.

Calibration process

Put the balance on and allow 60 minutes as stabilization time.


Calibrating with the internal weight.
Select ‘cal int’ on the panel.
Ensure that there is no load on the weighing pan.
Press and hold the “Cal/menu” key down until “cal’ appears on
the screen then release the key.
 The balance adjusts automatically. The adjusting is finished
when the massage “cal done” appears on the screen followed
by “0.0000g”.
 Check the balance against the standard reference weight
 Record the observation
 If the displayed reading found not within specified limit then
affix label “out of order” and inform to the store executive who
will further inform to the Engineering Department.
 Frequency: Daily for all balances.

ACCURACY CHECK: This is done to access how close the balance's


reading are to the true value.

ACCURACY CHECK PROCESS

 Weigh reference weight across the balance weighing range.


 Compare the displayed reading to the reference weight values.
Calculate the difference between the measured and the values.
 Acceptance criteria: The difference should be within the balance
specified tolerance limit.

PRECISION CHECK: This is done to determine the balance ability to


provide consistent reading for the same weight.

Process

 Repeatedly weigh the same reference weight multiple times.


 Calculate the standard deviation of the reading.
 Acceptance criteria- the standard deviation should be within the
balance's specified tolerance limits.

LINEARITY CHECKS : This evaluates the balance accuracy across it's


weighing range.

Process

 weigh several reference, weight with different masses , covering the


balance range.
 Plot the measured value against the true values.
 Access the linearity of the resulting curve.
 Acceptance criteria - the curve should be linear with no significant
deviation.

Example:
A weighing balance was purchased for use in a laboratory. Before
putting the balance into service, it is necessary to validate its
performance to determine whether to accept or reject it. This can be
done quantitatively by repeatedly weighing a reference weight with
a known standard mass of 10kg. The reference weight was placed
on the balance 20 times, and the following readings were obtained.

SX = 0.0001468 / 4.4721

SX = 0.00003283

(3) Coefficient of Variance = SD/X x 100

= 0.0001468 / 10.000005 x 100

= 0.001468

Upper acceptable Range = Certified weight + 3SD

Lower acceptable Range = Certified weight - 3SD

Upper acceptable Range = 10 + 3 (0.0001468)

= 10 + 0.0004404

= 10.0004404

Lower acceptable Range = 10 - 3 (0.0001468)

= 10 - 0.0004404

= 9.9996

Acceptable range = 9.9996 - 10.0004

For 10kg standard mass measured The

measurement given by weighing balance were

not below 9.9996 or above 10.0004

Therefore the weighing balance calibration pass

t_calculated = 0.1523
df = n - 1 = 20 - 1 = 19

t_tabulated = 2.093 at α = 0.05

Therefore, weighing balance is accepted
