LOWER KS2 · LESSON 2 Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

Lesson plan
We are currently producing more waste than ever before,
which is having an impact on our environment.
It is important that we consider how we can reduce Lesson time
the amount of materials we use in the first place, 60 minutes
reuse the objects we have and recycle materials to
make other products.

You can deliver the lesson in small table groups or as a whole class.

Lesson two
SLIDE 2-3 Introduce the lesson and explain that we are going to be looking at
materials and in particular the materials we might throw away.
Read out the facts and pose the questions: Why do you think it’s important
to reduce the amount of materials we use? What can we do about the
amount of rubbish we make each year?

SLIDE 4 Learning objective

To understand how reducing the amount of materials we
use everyday, and reusing and recycling materials where possible,
helps our environment.

SLIDE 5-7 Activity one

In pairs, ask the class to write down the materials they can spot
in the bin.
Extension questions: What properties do these materials have?
What other things do we throw away (food waste, shoes, DVD’s,
clothes etc)?

SLIDE 8 Reduce
Introduce the concept of reducing waste. Ask the class why this is
a good picture to represent reducing waste. Can they give you any
other examples? What materials are not being used if we shop this way?
SLIDE 9-10 Which is the best fruit and veg to buy? Why? What do we know about the
packaging and how it can harm the environment?
SLIDE 11-12 What materials are these made from? What properties make them good
to hold drinks? Why is the one on the right better for the environment?

SLIDE 13 Reuse
What materials are they made from?
SLIDE 14 Ask the class if they can think of any other ways to
reuse objects and items they no longer want?

SLIDE 15 Recycle
What materials can be recycled and made into new objects?

Recap to identify the main materials that can be recycled.

SLIDE 16-17 Activity two

Ask the class which objects would go into the recyclable category
and non-recyclable category.

SLIDE 18 Activity three

Before you start the activity, this is a good opportunity to talk about the
different bins in your area and what is collected from home. If the class
don’t already know, explain a little about composting.
Introduce the three different bins and set up the three bin cards at
the front of the classroom or on separate tables. Hand out sets of
waste cards and ask the class which bin they will put the waste in.
When completed, review with the class and address any incorrect cards.
Rather than putting the clothes, shoes and DVD’s in the bin,
what else could we have done with them? Why is that better than
putting them in the bin?

SLIDE 19 Summary
Discuss today’s learning. For example, plastic is waterproof, thus a good
material for a drinks bottle. Can the class give other examples?

SLIDE 20 How can we help the environment?

SLIDE 21 Homework / extension activity

Ask the children to consider what their environmental superhero would
look like. What would they say? How would they encourage people to
reduce, reuse and recycle? Give each child a copy of the task sheet.
