Aspects Direct Speech Reported Speech


"I love this book." She said (that) she loved that book.
Pronouns

Present Simple: "I play tennis." Past Simple: She said she played tennis.

Present Continuous: "I am playing." Past Continuous: She said she was playing.

Tense Changes
Past Simple: "I visited France." Past Perfect: She said she had visited
France.
Future Simple: "I will call you." Conditional: She said she would call me.

He says, 'I am tired.' He says he is tired.


No change if reporting verb is in He says, 'I am tired.' He said he was tired.
present

"now" → "then" "I am leaving now." → She said she was


leaving then.
"today" → "that day" "I'll call today." → He said he'd call that
day.
"yesterday" → "the day before" "I saw her yesterday." → She said she had
seen her the day before.
Time and Place Words "here" → "there" "Stay here." → He told me to stay there.
"I want this." → She said she wanted that.
"this/these" → "that/those" “Will you go to the market next week?” →
He asked me if I would go to the market
the following week.
“next week” → "the following week”

Yes/No Questions "Do you like ice cream?" She asked if I liked ice cream.
Wh- Questions "Where do you live?" She asked where I lived.
"Close the door." He told me to close the door.
She asked me to help her.
"Please help me."
Commands/Requests/Advice He advised me to see a doctor.
"You should see a doctor."

"I will call you." She said she would call me.
"I can swim." He said he could swim.
Modal Verbs "I may go." She said she might go.
"I must leave." He said he had to leave.
"You should go." She said I should go.
Optional "That" "She said (that) she was tired." "She said she was tired."
