the art of natural cooling

coolant beehive
air, handmade.
beehive
The Beehive is a modular facade unit, composed of terracotta
pots, that cools your space through a combination of evaporative
cooling and natural ventilation. Envelope cooling is the practice
that has been used here to reduce the heat gain through the
building envelope.

Using the Beehive as a second skin for your facade, can reduce the
cooling demand of your spaces drastically and hence save energy
and electricity bills.

Design can be customised to suit the clients’ needs.

INR 800 - 1500/- per sqft.

Terracotta pots were traditionally used to keep water cool and also
to grow plants. This installation- a combination of terracotta pots
and tiles- is what we see as a prototype for future facades, and
wanted it to perform cooling as well as grow plants using capsules.

Introducing CoolAnt 'Binary' – a cutting-edge linear screen that

enhances cooling efficiency and performance with its larger surface
area and acts as a vertical garden. Its innovative linear tiles
minimize water wastage, making it an eco-friendly choice.

Design can be customised to suit the clients’ needs.

Similar to the leaf, terracotta units breathe from the

small pores on the surface.

These unit is designed in such a way that it

encourages the air to flow along its large surfaces.
Not only this, it is designed to have a small cavity
that could store water.

Working of the module.
• The profile of the module is in shape of an aeroLeaf, for the air to
move swiftly along the sides.

• The evaporation happens from the two surfaces which are moist
throughout.

• In an assembly the 2 modules are placed such that it creates a

nozzle effect in between for the air to gush inside the buildings.

terrabyte
bits of waste for a byte of cooling
terrabyte
Tonnes of terracotta waste is produced every day in the
form of damaged pots, kulhads, tiles, and much more.
Although the properties of terracotta remain unaltered
over time, this waste aggravates landfill and resource
depletion issues, as a lot of embodied energy is consumed
during its manufacturing.

We have experimented with construction debris, broken

pots and tiles in this gabion wall for the same purpose; to
create a breathable wall with upcycled terracotta.

climate resilient cooling tower
cacti
Drawing inspiration from the cactus, a symbol of
remarkable resilience, "Cooling Cacti" epitomizes the
adaptability required in an ever-changing climate. Like the
cactus that thrives in harsh desert conditions, our
installation doesn’t only stand tall, but also cools its
surroundings naturally.

climate awareness through art
coolart
Through our art installations in public spaces like touristic
destinations, airports, institutions, parks etc we are
demonstrating how these solutions work and spreading
awareness about the need for nature friendly solutions.

We aim to bring in the modern endearment with earthy

materials and texture, as we believe that being sustainable
doesn’t only focus at the architecture. We experiment with
indian crafts and craftsmen going hands on as much as
possible, while appreciating the local material and
traditional skills.

FAQs
frequently asked questions
1. What makes CoolAnt Lifestyle special?

In order to live in healthy communities, we need clean air, natural resources, and a non-toxic environment. Coolant

provides a sustainable alternative to existing modes of thermal comfort that provide cool air at the cost of the

immediate environment.

2. What is the difference between CoolAnt and other air cooling

devices (Air Conditioners or Air Coolers)?

Facts: Coolant can be used along with Air conditioners, Air coolers and Jali Coolant needs water to function i.e. it

works on evaporative cooling technique Coolant is modular and can scale up to cool indoor, semi outdoor and

outdoor spaces. Coolant does not emit any greenhouse gases. Coolant does not make loud noise while operating.

Myths: Coolant can replace Air Conditioners, Air coolers and Jali. Coolant does not cause an increase in humidity.

Coolant can cooldown as rapidly as other air cooling devices in the market.
3. Where does Coolant come from?

Coolant products are rooted in the history of ancient cooling techniques used in Indian and Egyptian cultures.

These techniques are modernised and adapted to current technology by our team of engineers, designers,

architects and scientists. Each pot in a Coolant product is handcrafted with love by our network of potters in India.

4. What are the energy savings of Using CoolAnt?

Based on our current analysis, we anticipate a saving of about 15% - 30%

5. What are the cost savings of Using CoolAnt?

Based on our current installations, we anticipate a saving of about 5% - 10%.
6. Can it work on existing buildings or does it work only in new
construction projects?

Yes! Absolutely. Our facade solutions can be retrofitted in an existing structure, or even integrated into an upcoming

construction, in order to passively cool the building and reduce the energy requirements significantly. Please reach

out to us and we could discuss in detail your requirements.

7. Why terracotta? Why not some other natural materials?

Terracotta is a natural material with a very low carbon footprint. Compared to synthetic materials in the market,

terracotta is environmentally friendly and harmless to the environment.

8. Could a CoolAnt installation replace an A/C?

Typical A/C systems are set to around 24°C temperature and 60% relative humidity, however, the range for

comfortable temperatures for humans can extend up to 30°C - 32°C, given adequate air ventilation. Our system can

reduce the operating temperature to 28°C with lower power consumption. If you are not mandated by a building

code or prefer the temperature range of A/C systems then CoolAnt can be an effective solution alternative to A/C.

9. Is your solution also affordable for poorer households in India?

Our solution can be customised in order to address the fiscal aspect. Furthermore, easier implementation of our

system can be done by using locally available potters and materials. Cheaper solutions though have an issue of

longevity and one may find the need to replace individual terracotta pieces from time to time. Regardless of these

issues, individuals may find alternative materials for evaporative cooling locally and are welcome to come up with

alternatives.
10. Can it be used to create a climate-controlled environment in place of
A/C systems?

CoolAnt system is primarily designed for human comfort cooling and cannot be used directly for specialised areas

requiring precise climate controls.

11. Can it be used in combination with typical HVAC systems?

A modified system can be used to bring down inlet air temperature upto 28-30°C. Further temperature reduction

can be achieved using traditional A/C systems. This hybrid model can be used to reduce electrical load by a good

margin. Actual performance will depend on the specifics of the system.

12. Can it be integrated in HVAC duct systems directly?

Terracotta units can be used to replace honeycombs used in common evaporative cooling systems. This effectively

keeps the pre-existing ductwork unchanged, though a few alterations may be required if a different system was

used previously.

13. Can your system tackle heat-generating machinery?

Our system can tackle heat-generating machinery. So far, it has been tested for a maximum temperature of 55 to

60º C.
14. Can this system be used for green building and energy efficiency
compliances?

Yes, depending on the rating system, our product should give you benefits in energy performance, innovation and

other credits. You should consult with your green rating professional for specific rating systems.

15. What is the payback period of Beehive?

For commercial use - cost pu is rs 9 Savings = 3600*9=32400 Cost = 45000+5000(for 2 fans) Payback =

50000/32400= 1.54 years

For residential use - cost pu is rs 7 Savings = 3600*7=25200 Cost = 45000+5000(for 2 fans) Payback = 50000/25200

= 2 years
