1. Introduction
Manual handling involves lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling loads by hand or
bodily force. In Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) constructions, improper manual
handling during unloading and storage of materials can cause serious injuries
such as muscle strains, back injuries, and fractures.
2. Importance of Safe Material Unloading
Prevents injuries from falling or shifting materials.
Reduces material damage and wastage.
Ensures efficient workflow and organized storage.
3. Hazards of Improper Manual Handling
⚠ Musculoskeletal injuries (e.g., back strain, sprains, and hernias)
⚠ Slips, trips, and falls due to poor lifting techniques or obstructed pathways
⚠ Hand and foot injuries from dropping materials
⚠ Fatigue and exhaustion due to repetitive heavy lifting
a. Safe Manual Handling Practices
Assess the Load: Before lifting, check the weight, shape, and stability of
the material. Use mechanical aids for heavy loads.
Use Proper Lifting Techniques:
Keep a stable stance with feet shoulder-width apart.
Bend at the knees (not the waist) and keep the back straight.
Hold the load close to the body and lift with leg muscles, not the
back.
Avoid twisting the body while lifting or carrying loads.
b. Teamwork for Heavy Loads: Use team lifting for bulky materials or seek
mechanical assistance (e.g., forklifts, cranes, hoists).
c. Proper Storage & Organization: Place materials in designated storage
areas to prevent obstruction and tripping hazards.
d. Clear Work Areas: Keep unloading zones free from obstacles to allow safe
movement of materials.
4. PPE Requirements
🦺 Safety gloves – for a firm grip and hand protection
👢 Steel-toe boots – to prevent foot injuries from falling objects
🦯 Back support belt (if required) – for additional lower back support
5. Emergency Response
🚑 Report any injuries immediately to the supervisor.
📞 In case of an emergency, follow site-specific protocols and call for assistance.
