Read the following passage carefully and answer questions 11 – 18 based
on the information.
Success is a very powerful word. Many of us run behind it; most of us want to
conquer it. It is perhaps the most desired feeling that all of us want to experience
in the pursuit of our goals and also in our day to day life. So, what is success is all
about? Does it mean acquiring money or fame? The Oxford dictionary defines it as,
“The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.” This is the definition of success in
theory, but in reality it differs according to people’s interests and goals. It is very
important for every individual to define their own concept of success rather than
The Character count trait of January is “Accountability”:- willingness to accept responsibility for one's action.
following other’s footsteps. We must realize what makes us happy, what gives us
contentment and what motivates us?
None can deny that the whole world blindly respects and trusts wealthy people.
Money is the prime dynamic force that drives this world. Academic success is a
prime concern for all, especially, in the initial part of their life, especially, in school
days. For those who continue pursuing education, academic success is the epitome
of everything. It is also mostly observed that success in personal life becomes a
tough task for those who have all the riches. Here is where the common people
feel successful to have a happy personal life.
However, success is much more than riches, power or fame. Success is simply the
feeling of satisfaction and happiness one gets from leading a particular way of life
or carrying out a particular activity. True success means understanding our dreams
and working joyfully to make those dreams come true. The idea is that if you are
leading a way of life that you want, and one that makes you happy, then you are
already successful. Your success does not rely on winning a trophy or making
tones of money.
This version of the definition of success is unique because, unlike the more
traditional definitions, it sees success as a way of life – a journey –rather a
destination or a prize. While most view success as an accomplishment of a goal, a
truer definition would consider it as a way of living. While traditionally an athlete
would be considered successful for winning an Olympic medal, in actuality, an
athlete should be considered successful for being a professional athlete that
completes in the Olympics. Similarly, a businessman should be appreciated as a
success of running a profitable and stable business rather than considering only
the amount of money he made out a deal.
Viewing success as a one-off, and not as an ongoing effort, has its advantages
and dangers. It can be useful because it could make our pursuits easier. Let’s
consider our businessman from before as an example. If his goal is to set up a
company that produces watches and make a 10 million dollar profit in five years’
time, his goals are very specific, clear, and thus become easier to accomplish. He
knows what he wants; he knows what he must do; and he has clear picture of
The Character count trait of January is “Accountability”:- willingness to accept responsibility for one's action.
where he wants to be. On the other hand, he only has short-term goals. He has no
idea what he wants to do with his 10 million dollars, and where he wants to go
from there. This means that, even if he is ‘successful’ he would have to make new
plans for what to do and what to aim for going forward.
A truly successful businessman, however, would not set and invest himself
completely into the accomplishment of a short-term plan. He makes long-term and
life-long plans. He sets himself on the tasks of building a way of life for himself.
This means that he has become successful on the first day of his venture. If he
plans on building a world-class watch making company, he can be considered as
successful the day he began his life long journey of realizing this dream. All the ups
and downs and making this dream a reality is part of the journey, and it is not
constricted by a short-term goals that may break his efforts or obscure his
happiness. The businessman who planned for the short-term would be a failure if
he were unable to earn that 10 million profit he aimed for whereas the second one
would still be a successful businessman even after failing to meet profit margin so
long as he continues to push on realizing his dream of becoming a world class
watch maker.
Many great people have suggested various ways to achieve success. But the real
secret ingredient to nail success is to believe that we are already successful. With
this strong affirmative thought, success can be easily achieved if we follow our
passion because that is where our heart and soul is. When we follow our passion,
there is no need for us to put any extra effort to build confidence, to face any
challenging situations and most importantly if we discipline ourselves.
The Character count trait of January is “Accountability”:- willingness to accept responsibility for one's action.
