Reading Selection:
Protecting the Forests: Thieza Verdijo’s Mission

Many forests in the Philippines are disappearing due to illegal logging

and deforestation. This destroys the homes of animals and affects the
indigenous people who live in these areas. One of the forests at risk is
the Kalatungan Mountain Range in Bukidnon.

A. Reviewing Previous Lesson Thieza Verdijo, an environmentalist, saw this problem and took action.
or Presenting the New Lesson She works with local indigenous communities to replant trees and
protect the forest. She also helps them claim their ancestral lands, so
they can take care of the forests for future generations.

Through tree planting, conservation projects, and community

partnerships, Thieza and her team are helping to restore the forests.
Their efforts show that when people work together, they can save
nature and protect their heritage.

Identify the solutions presented on the reading selection:

Unlocking of Difficulties:
Discipline - an area of knowledge; a subject that people study or are
taught, especially in a university (www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com)

The teacher will provide an informative handout to the students on

their lesson of the day.

A discipline-specific word refers to a term or vocabulary that is unique

to a particular field of study or professional practice. These words are
often technical or specialized in nature and are used by professionals,
researchers, and practitioners within that specific field.

The following table shows one version of the main academic

disciplines and some of their branches.

chapter/exploring-academic-disciplines/

Understanding Discipline-Specific Vocabulary

Some words are used only in specific subjects or jobs. These are
called discipline-specific vocabulary because they are special words
that help experts explain ideas clearly and correctly. These words
have meanings that normal, everyday words cannot fully express.

Each subject has its own special words to help people understand and
communicate better. Here are some examples:

Science: Words like photosynthesis (how plants make food using

sunlight), mitochondria (a part of a cell that gives energy), and
quantum mechanics (a branch of physics that studies tiny particles).
Literature: Words like metaphor (a way of comparing two things
without using "like" or "as"), bildungsroman (a story about a
character’s growth), and alliteration (repeating the same sound in a
sentence).
History: Words like feudalism (a system of government in the Middle
Ages), Renaissance (a time of great learning and art in Europe), and
Cold War (a long conflict between the US and the Soviet Union).
Economics: Words like inflation (when prices of things go up),
opportunity cost (what you lose when you choose one thing over
another), and monopoly (when one company controls an entire
business).
The teacher will show different branches of discipline along with
examples of discipline-specific words:

Science: (Biology,Chemistry, Physics)

D. Discussing New Concepts Biology: (Botanist,Ecosystem, DNA)
and Practicing New Skills #1 Chemistry:(Catalyst,Covalent Bond)
Physics:(Velocity, Kenetic Energy , Quantum Mechanics)

English(Simile, Hyperbole ,Onomatopiea

The teacher will show again the expository text:

Protecting the Forests: Thieza Verdijo’s Mission

The teacher will pose this question:

1. Discussing New What branch of discipline does this expository text belong?
Concepts and Practicing (Based on the words/discipline-specific word it shows)
Skills #2 a. Environmental Science (studies the interactions between the
natural world and humans)
b. Political Science (examines government systems, laws, and
policies)
c. Economics (focuses on trade, resources, and financial systems)
F. Developing Mastery The teacher will present an activity:
(leads to
Formative Assessment) Place It In The Discipline Box!
Instruction: Place a given random tool inside the correct box based on
its label of the field of discipline.
Random tools: gavel, handcuffs, stethoscope, magnet, beaker,
compass, map, globe, syringe.

The teacher will check and probe the choice of each group.

Probing questions:
Is this tool placed in the correct label? How so?

Answer key:
1. Medicine and Health Sciences
🔹Stethoscope – Used by doctors to listen to heartbeats.
🔹 Thermometer – Measures body temperature.
🔹 Syringe – Used for injections or drawing blood.

2. Law and Criminology

🔹 Gavel – Used by judges in court.
🔹 Handcuffs – Used by police officers to restrain suspects.

3. Science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry)

🔹 Microscope – Used to see tiny organisms.
🔹 Beaker and test tube – Common in chemistry labs.
🔹 Magnet – Used in physics experiments.

4. Mathematics and Engineering

🔹 Calculator – Helps solve mathematical problems.
🔹 Compass and protractor – Used for measuring angles.

5. History and Political Science

🔹 Map and globe – Shows locations of countries and historical events.
🔹 Old coins or paper money – Used in different historical periods.
🔹 Flag – Represents a country or political movement.
After the activity, the teacher will ask the questions:
D. Finding Practical
Applications of Concepts 1. Who among you has seen these things in person?
and Skills in Daily Living 2. What are the name of these and how do professionals/practitioners
use it?
E. Making Generalizations
Ask the students the following:
and
1. Who uses discipline-specific words?
Abstractions about the 2. How does it help professionals/people communicate properly?
Lesson
I. Evaluating Learning The teacher will present an activity:

Instruction: Analyze the text and identify the branch of discipline the
reading text belongs.

1. Photosynthesis and Plant Health

Some plants do not grow well and become weak due to a lack of
sunlight. Without proper exposure to light, plants cannot produce their
own food. Providing sufficient sunlight allows plants to undergo
photosynthesis, the process by which they convert light into energy.
Placing plants near a window or in an open area ensures they receive
the necessary light for growth.
What branch of discipline does this expository text belong?
a. Environmental Science (studies the interactions between the
natural world and humans) ✅
b. Political Science (examines government systems, laws, and
policies)
c. Economics (focuses on trade, resources, and financial systems)
d. History (studies past events and their on societies.)

2. The Cold War and Global Tensions

The Cold War created political and military tensions between the
United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries developed nuclear
weapons and influenced other nations, increasing the risk of conflict.
Diplomatic efforts, peace agreements, and arms control treaties
helped ease tensions. The establishment of international
organizations also contributed to reducing hostilities and promoting
cooperation between former rivals.
What branch of discipline does this expository text belong?
a. History (studies past events and their impact on societies) ✅
b. Environmental Science (studies the interactions between the
natural world and humans)
c. Economics (focuses on trade, resources, and financial systems)
d. Political Science (examines government systems, laws, and
policies)

3. Understanding Complex Poems

Some poems use figurative language, symbolism, and difficult
vocabulary, making them challenging to interpret. Readers may
struggle to grasp their meaning and themes. Breaking the poem into
smaller parts, analyzing its structure, and identifying literary devices
can aid understanding. Consulting references or discussing with
others can also provide deeper insight into the poem’s message.
What branch of discipline does this expository text belong?
a. Literature (studies written works, including poetry, novels, and
plays) ✅
b. Political Science (examines government systems, laws, and
policies)
c. Mathematics (focuses on numbers, shapes, and calculations)
d. Economics (focuses on trade resources and financial system)

4. Misconception About a Quadrilateral Triangle

Some learners mistakenly believe that a shape can be both a
quadrilateral and a triangle at the same time. This misunderstanding
leads to confusion in geometry. Clarifying the properties of shapes
helps eliminate this misconception. A triangle has three sides, while a
quadrilateral has four. Learning their distinct characteristics ensures
correct classification of geometric figures.
What branch of discipline does this expository text belong?
