CIVN3010A (2025)-Tutorial 01
Tutorial solutions should be submitted through ULWAZI platform before 27th February 2025
at 7:00PM
INSTRUCTIONS:
➢ Submission of tutorial is compulsory via Ulwazi portal. This tutorial is NOT GRADED and is a
group submission (You are allowed to work in groups of not more than 3 people). Ensure that all
group members names and student ID are listed on cover page.
➢ All submissions should be handwritten, each page should have a page number e.g 1/10 to denote
page 1 out of 10.
➢ Scans should be of sufficient resolution to be legible. It is your responsibility to ensure that.
➢ The grade of steel is S355JR unless stated otherwise.
➢ All dimensions are in mm.
Question 1_______________________________________________________________________
a) Briefly list the key differences between Allowable Stress Methods and Limit States based Methods
b) With the help of sketches, show the load paths of a typical steel framed structure for both gravity
and lateral loads.
c) With help of sketches, explain the different structural systems for resisting lateral loads
Question 2_______________________________________________________________________
The structural connection consists of a Parallel Flange Channel PC200 x 75 bolted to a gusset plat as shown
in Fig Q2-1. The holes are drilled and the connection is done using M20 bolts.
Sketch the shear block failure paths for the gusset plate

Question 3_______________________________________________________________________
A 2.0m long unequal angle member in tension in a truss system is required to carry a permanent load of
200kN and an imposed live load of 150kN. Given that the angle is connected using the longer leg, design the
member and optimise it for the lightest section.
Note: In this exercise we will not design the actual weld so it is assumed the weld does not fail. You are free
to make use of any combination of transverse and longitudinal welds. The gusset plate connection places
restrictions on dimensions as shown below.
