CHE221 Tutorial 1 Questions 25 03 2013 Week

The document outlines a tutorial for CHE 221 at the University of Botswana, focusing on Group 1 elements in chemistry. It includes questions on electronic configurations, ionization energies, reactions with water, trends in melting points and ionic radii, and specific reactions involving lithium and sodium compounds. Additionally, it discusses the identification of compounds formed from reactions with alkali metals and oxygen.

Academic session 2012-2013

CHE 221 Tutorial I (25/03/2013-29/03/2013)

1. Give the general notation that shows the ground state electronic configuration for the
Group 1 elements.

2. Explain why for a given alkali metal the second ionization energy is much higher than the
first ionization energy.

3. All the group 1 metals react violently with water and the intensity of the reaction
increases as the group is descended. Explain.

4. Discuss trends in melting points and ionic radii, r+, for group 1 elements.

5. Suggest what will happen when a mixture of LiI and NaF is heated gievn ΔfHo(LiI, s) = -
270 KJ mol-1 ΔfHo(NaI, s) = -288 KJ mol-1 ΔfHo(LiF, s) = -616 KJ mol -1 ΔfHo(NaF, s) =
-577 KJ mol-1

6. Suggest why KF is a better reagent than NaF for replacement of chlorine in organic
compounds according to the reaction:

7. Compound A was isolated from the reaction between a group 1 metal M and O2. A reacts
with water to give only MOH, while M reacts in controlled manner with water giving
MOH and another product B. Suggest identities of A, B and M. Write equations for the
reactions described. Compare the reaction of M with O2 with those of other group 1 metals
with O2.
