OPERATIONS RESEARCH (23IM5PCOPR)

TIME: 3.00 Hrs SEMESTER :V MAX MARKS: 100

NOTE: Answer any five full questions choosing one from each unit.
UNIT – I

1.a) “Operations Research is an aid for the executive in making his decisions based on scientific 05
method analysis.” Discuss the above statement in brief.
b) Prove that the dual of the dual of a given primal is again primal 05
c) A firm can produce three types of cloth say A, B and C. Three kinds of wool are required for
it, say red wool, green wool and blue wool. One unit length of type A cloth needs 2 yards of
red wool and 3 yards of blue wool; one unit length of type B cloth needs 3 yards of red wool,
2 yards of green wool and 2 yards of blue wool; and one unit of type C cloth needs 5 yards of
green wool and 4 yards of blue wool. The firm has only a stock of 8 yards of red wool, 10 10
yards of green wool and 15 yards of blue wool. It is assumed that the income obtained from
one unit length of type A cloth is Rs. 3.00, of type B cloth is Rs. 5.00 and of type C cloth is
Rs. 4.00. Formulate the problem as linear programming problem.

UNIT – II

3.a) A company has four manufacturing plants and five warehouses. Each plant manufactures the 15
same product, which is sold at different prices in each warehouse area. The cost of
manufacturing and cost of raw materials are different in each plant due to various factors. The
capacities of the plants are also different. The relevant data is given in the following table

The company has five warehouses. The sale prices, transportation costs and demands are
given in the following table:

4a) A manufacturer of complex electronic equipment has just received a sizable contract and plans
to subcontract part of the job. He has solicited bids for 6 subcontracts from 3 firms. Each job
is sufficiently large and any firm can take only one job. The table shows the bids as well as 10
the cost estimates (in lakhs of rupee) for doing the job internally. Not more than three jobs
can be performed internally.

an average of 10 hours. If the average delay of ships waiting for berths is to be kept below 14
hours, how many berths should be provided at the port ?

mean service rate of 8 letters per hour. The letters arrive at a rate of 5 per hour during the
entire 8 – hour work day. If the typewriter is valued at Rs. 1.50 per hour, determine:
i) The percentage time that an arriving letter has to wait
ii) Average system time
iii) Average cost due to waiting on the part of typewriter i.e. it remaining idle.
iv) Efficiency of the system

A food products’ company is contemplating the introduction of a revolutionary new product

with new packaging or replacing the existing product at much higher price (S1). It may even
8a) make a moderate change in the composition of the existing product, with a new packaging at
a small increase in price (S2), or may mall a small change in the composition of the existing 12
product, backing it with the word ‘New’ and a negligible increase in price (S3). The three
possible states of nature or events are: (i) high increase in sales (N1), (ii) no change in sales
(N2) and (iii) decrease in sales (N3). The marketing department of the company worked out
the payoffs in terms of yearly net profits for each of the strategies of three events (expected
sales). This is represented in the following table:

Which strategy should the concerned executive choose on the basis of (a) Maxi-min
criterion (b) Mini-max criterion (c) Laplace criterion?

Mr. Sinha has to decide whether or not to drill a well on his farm. In his village, only 40% of

b) water at 200 feet drilled further up to 250 feet but only 20% struck water at 250 feet. Cost of 08
drillings is Rs. 50/- per foot. Mr. Sinha estimated that he would pay Rs. 18000/- during a 5-
year period in the present value terms, if he continues to buy water from the neighbour rather
than go for the well which would have life of 5 years. Mr. Sinha has three decisions to make:
(a) Should he drill up to 200 feet? (b) If no water is found at 200 feet, should he drill up to
250 feet? (c) Should he continue to buy water from his neighbour? Draw up an appropriate
decision tree and determine its optimal decision.
