Headline

The headline is the largest text on the page and indicates the purpose of the article to the
audience. This can often be a ‘pull quote’ to interest the audience plus they design the
headline creatively so its eye catching to the audience. The headline usually anchors the
main image.

The headline on this image is ‘Unleash hell’ in large white fonting however it is fragmented
and eroded slightly. The phrase ‘Unleash hell’ has connotations of frustration, aggression
and violence so signifies to the audience that the film will contain these. Furthermore, the
headline is repeated as its written on the front cover page in a smaller font in a brighter white
font and is not fragmenting. The headline eroding signifies how the Gladiator movies
represent history in Rome. Furthermore the ‘unleash hell’ signifies that there is a lot of
brutality and anger in the colosseum which refers to the main image as the main character
as a stern, aggravated facial expression as he seems to be in the colosseum fighting linking
to the term ‘mis en scene’ translating to what you see in the image.

Main Image

The main image conventionally takes up 1 of 2 pages and may bleed across the centre fold.
The main image may use direct address to engage the audience plus the ‘mise en scene’
will be visually interesting and signify the content of the article.

For the main image it takes up two pages and the main character is on the left-hand side. He
is not doing direct address however his eyes line is on the left top gold point and he seems
to be concentrating on something out of the shot. The Gladiator is in the colosseum and is
holding a steel chain in his hands signifying he is fighting plus he seems to have makeup on
which conveys dirt. In the background there are crowds cheering in the colosseum stands
and they seem to be celebrating signifying that the Gladiator may have won a fight.
Furthermore, the French term ‘Mise en scene’ transliterates to what you see in the image.
The Gladiator seems to be wearing some sort of tunic in the first image conveying how he is
poor and unimportant whereas in the second image he’s wearing armour conveying how he
is well-known. Furthermore, the scene is in daytime as it is light outside. The stance and
body language he is in illustrates that he is fighting and his facial expression is stern. This
main image gives the audience a brief view of the movie and encourages the audience to
see what happens.

By line

The by line is credits that go towards the writer and the photographer of the article. It usually
positioned near the headline or at the end of the article.

On this by line it gives credit to the writer who is Hayley Campbell. The writer’s name is
written under the stand first signifying how they wrote it. The writing is in a small, bold font as
it is not very important plus it doesn’t take your eyes off the main image, which makes it a
conventional by line.
Stand first

A standfirst is similar to an introduction to the article and usually positioned under the
headline or in the first paragraph of the article. Conventionally the writing is smaller than the
headline text but is larger than the main body text.

In this magazine the stand first is located in the bottom right corner and in a bigger font than
the by line, it is written in a black, bold font so it stands out to the audience plus it is clear to
the audience making it easy to read. In this it tells you how Empire have had an interview
with the cast of Gladiator 2 to see what information they could find out about the movie. The
stand first is conventional as the font is smaller than the headline but larger than the main
body text on the next page.

Page number and additional information

The page number and additional information is small and in the outer corners of the bottom
of the page with the page number and sometimes including the masthead and issue
information

This is located in the right corner at the bottom of the magazine. This has the month and
year of when it was written in a small bold black font. Next to it says Empire in a small red
font signifying the name of the magazine. Furthermore, it has the page number in a black
font which is small. This is conventional as it includes the page and the year plus the month
the magazine was released. Empire includes the masthead next to the page number and
additional information signifying their business.

Drop Cap

The drop cap is the first letter of the article and is enlarged plus is dropping down into the
main body text. Indicates the beginning of an article.

In the article the drop cap is conventional as the letter I is enlarged and drops down into the
main body text however it is unconventional as the drop cap is introduced in the middle of
the article whereas usually it is at the beginning. The writing is in a black font with a pale
gold colour as the background. The letter I is in a bold gold font signifying the beginning of
the article. The colour gold has connotations of power, wealth and success which connotates
Empire plus matches in with the images and Gladiator 2.
Pull Quote

The pull quote is a quote from the article which is repeated in a larger font to grab the
audience’s attention and encouraging them to read the magazine. Conventionally it is
positioned in the middle of a column of text or on the main image.

The pull quote is located under an image of a scene in the film that links together with it. This
is written in a gold bold font and is quite large so it is easy to see. The quote says ‘Baboons.
That’s how you make a sequel to one of the most legendary films of all time: stick some
baboons in it.’ which can signify how the actors portray baboons while filming. The director of
Gladiator one and two quotes this as he believed that baboons should be included in
Gladiator 2 as he goes on to say ‘baboons are formidable, and that you could lose your arm
and head wrestling one. He also said that they look great and are meant to be funny’.
Furthermore, the plural noun ‘baboons’ intrigues the audience as they want to know if
Gladiator 2 as baboons in the film and the reasoning for it, encouraging and persuading
them to watch the film.

Secondary image

The secondary image is any images that feature in the article, in addition to the main image.
This provides more visual information for the audience.

On the right-hand side of the magazine there are 3 images of scenes in the new Gladiator
movies. These hint to the audience on what happens in the film but don’t spoil it for them.
Furthermore, there are short descriptions of the images underneath to give a bit of detail to
them. This appeals to the audience because the images give them a vision of what the
movie is like and how it is filmed.

Main body text

The main body text is the body of text that makes up the article. This is the smallest font on
the page and usually in a simple and plain style.

The main body text is conventional as it is in a plain style and small. The writing is in a black
font and there is a pale gold colour as the background behind. The main body text describes
the photos as well as interviews they’ve done with the cast of Gladiator 2. The writing is in
black so it doesn’t stand out but is easy to see and read for the audience plus it is small so
the photos of the scenes can be enlarged so the audience can have visual references.
Captions on images

Captions on images link to a previous article that the magazine as wrote about which
connects to the image.

On the main image it has a caption in a small white font so the audiences’ eyes are focused
on the main image. The writing is in white as the photo is in quite dark colours so the white
writing contrasts and makes it easier to see. The caption explains what’s happening in the
photo and also features what actors play what role. This helps the audience have reference
to the images as well as informs them about the background of the scene in the photo.

Column layout

A column layout is used to create structure and order in the magazine to allow the audience
to use and navigate around the page. Conventionally three columns to a page.

The column layout is underneath an image and conventional has it has 3 columns per page.
The background is in a pale gold font with the writing in a small black font which makes it
stand out more due to the colour difference. On the left, Empire uses a pull quote written in
gold and with a white background similar to the colours in the scenes. Furthermore, there is
a drop cap has the letter I is enlarged and drops down into the main body text and signifies
the start of a paragraph. The column layout helps the audience has it is organised so easy to
navigate around the page.

House style

The house style is like the brand style of the magazine. It includes the style of fonts, layout,
colour scheme and language. This will usually be appropriate fort the genre of the magazine
and the target audience.

Empire magazine mostly uses a pale gold colour for the background of a text signifying the
wording which is in a small black colour. The pull quote is in a bold, gold font and quite large
so the audiences’ eyes are drawn to it and interested in what it has to say. The layout of the
images is organised with 2 main images on different pages and 3 secondary images down
the side on the right side of the page. The writing is in columns of 5 which is unconventional
as it is usually 3 to a page however it is in a small black font with a pale gold colour as the
background. In one of the articles, it uses a drop cap highlighting the start of a sentence, it is
in the same gold colour as the pull quote and is quite large. The house style is similar to the
genre of the magazine as the colour of the writing and background suits nicely with the
images of the scenes. However, it contrasts from the target audience as Empire’s reader are
usually 18-40 according to the media pack and the average age is 36 plus the media packs
say 74% of the audience are in employment and 68% are in the ABC1 profile, meaning
they’re middle class so opposes the fact they are rich and powerful as the colours Empire
use signify that. The house style for these pages is similar to the front cover as they use
similar colours and uses the same quote ‘unleash hell’ in matching colours but different
sizes. The pages also both have the main character on, in different scenes of the film so the
audience can see a difference in character. On the other hand, the contents page is different
to the front cover and double page as it doesn’t use colours such as gold and the writing isn’t
in white. This shows the audience how this page does not relate or have any content with
the gladiator 2 movie.
