Every business has data that is necessary to its operations. Data loss or unavailability can
be destructive to the success of a business. For this reason, businesses need to have a data
protection strategy that will ensure that their data is available and recoverable in the event
of a disaster.

There are three aspects of data protection: Archiving, Availability, and Backup and
Recovery.

The goal of data archiving is to provide long term storage for static data. A successful
archiving solution keeps data accessible for long periods of time while ensuring that the
data is not modified. For example, medical records often need to be stored for years and
should not be modified once they are archived.

Availability is the process of ensuring that data is always available, even in the event of a
disaster at the data center. Availability solutions aim to eliminate downtime so that
business operations can continue unimpeded. For example, a crashed disk array could be
configured to quickly failover to a secondary disk array to ensure that data is still available.

Backup and recovery is the process of storing secondary copies of data in the event of a
disaster, data loss, or corruption. If any data is ever lost or corrupted, older copies of that
data can be recovered in order to restore business functions. For example, if a critical file or
email is accidentally deleted, it can be restored from the most recent backup.

Although this course focuses on backup and recovery, all three aspects are needed to
provide a comprehensive data protection solution.

In today’s complex backup environments, the challenges faced by backup administrators
vary from ever-shortening backup windows to increasing amounts of data to be backed up.
Added to this is the expectation of keeping operating costs down.

Multiple operating systems and applications with multiple service packs and patches along
with the different storage arrays, network topologies, and target devices -- all add to the
complexity of the environment. Backup data needs to be available to satisfy RPO and RTO
for applications and databases of different levels of criticality. Some applications may
require 24/7 availability with short RPO and RTO requirements.

To address the challenges of a complex environment requires flexibility in the backup

application to employ different methods of backup and recovery. Among these are using
customized backup agents for specific databases and applications, leveraging snapshots and
replicas for backup and recovery, and backing up and recovering in virtual environments.

A successful backup and recovery solution includes a backup and media manager, storage,
and data protection management. A backup and media manager is the software that
initiates and manages backup and restore operations. It may also manage media such as
tape and cloud devices. Storage devices are needed to store the secondary copies of data.
Data protection management is the process of managing all assets and software involved in
protecting a company’s critical assets. Businesses need to know that their critical
application data is protected, that they can prove it’s protected and that if there are issues,
they can find them and fix them quickly.
EMC’s backup and recovery products help organizations to meet these challenges through
software and disk-based technologies. This slide shows how the EMC portfolio addresses the
different needs and requirements in backup and recovery environments.

EMC Avamar is a comprehensive, client-server network backup and restore solution.
Avamar’s disk-based, global deduplication technology reduces the amount of backup data
as compared with traditional backup methods. This results in quicker backup times, less
backup data traveling over the network and less backup data to be stored.

Avamar employs a scalable server architecture built of modules that provide a balance of
connectivity, security, processing and disk storage resources. Scheduled backup and
replication functionality enable efficient backup of remote and virtual environments and
provide disaster recovery of primary backup sites.

For restores, Avamar simplifies operations by always presenting a full backup as of a single
point-in-time. To ensure system integrity, Avamar provides systematic fault tolerance with
RAID, RAIN, replication, checkpoints and regular checkpoint validation.

The slide lists important characteristics of Data Domain that differentiate Data Domain from
other deduplication appliances.

A Data Domain system is optimized, first to backup and second to archive. Data Domain
systems are qualified with leading enterprise backup software and archiving applications
and can easily integrate into existing storage infrastructures. The Data Domain storage
system uses a CPU-centric, inline approach to deduplication. Data Domain SISL technology
and inline deduplication allow Data Domain systems to integrate easily and scale rapidly as
hardware and CPUs advance. Combined with efficient use of disk storage, this results in a
system that is simpler, requires less administration and is smaller to provision. Data
Domain’s Data Invulnerability Architecture helps to provide safe and reliable storage using
end-to-end verification.

ProtectPoint provides backup and recovery using snapshot technology. As a result, impact
on production applications or databases is very low. ProtectPoint only pauses the application
briefly to mark the point in time for an application consistent backup. Backups are fast and
efficient because the data is sent directly from primary storage to protection storage of the
SAN. This means that the application is not impacted and IP networks are not used.

ProtectPoint also allows application owners and database administrators to have control of
backups through their native application utilities. ProtectPoint can also integrate with
NetWorker so that backups and restores can be initiated by a NetWorker administrator.

Designing a backup solution is not an exact science. Many factors must be taken into
consideration and there are often multiple valid solutions. Nevertheless, we can look at
some common types of environments and identify their key considerations and strategies
for addressing them.

The ever-increasing amount of data for backup presents a challenge to organizations facing
the demands of shorter backup windows, quicker restore responses, consistent backups of
remote sites and corporate and regulatory requirements. When a business is storing
massive amounts of data, the storage of extra copies of that data becomes a primary
concern. In big data environments, deduplication is an important feature that can greatly
reduce the storage footprint of backup data. Both Avamar and Data Domain provide
deduplicated storage, and Data Domain can be used by either NetWorker, Avamar, or
ProtectPoint for storage.

Backing up remote offices can be a challenge because data needs to be sent over a WAN.
Since WAN connections have lower bandwidths, backup windows tend to increase. A
solution to this issue is to reduce the amount of data that needs to travel over the WAN.
Deduplication at the source side can be used to reduce the amount of data over the WAN.
Also, deploying storage at each remote site while managing it separately can reduce the
requirement for backups over a slower network.

Avamar provides the ability to deduplicate at the client, thereby reducing the amount of
data sent. NetWorker’s flexible architecture can be used to deploy storage nodes and media
at each remote location.

When backing up data from applications or databases, a crucial consideration is to ensure
that the application is supported by the backup product. This allows the application to
continue to run after a restore. Also, the impact on the regular application or database
function is important. Although backups are important, their effect on regular functions
must be minimal.

Backup products should support hot backups. This allows the application data to be backed
up without taking the application offline. All EMC backup products have the ability to take
hot backups of many common applications and databases.

This lesson covers various backup and recovery scenarios and provides potential solutions
for them.

An environment has a large number of virtual machines. Virtual machines often have a
large percentage of common data, such as operating system files. New VMs are constantly
being deployed and old VMs are removed. This makes backup difficult because the backup
administrator is not always notified of these changes.

Because of the complex and changing nature of the virtual machine environment, the
protection of virtual machines is unknown. VMs currently use guest-level protection, but
this causes resource contention with the applications running on the VMs.

Avamar is well suited for protecting clients in VMware environments by reducing the
amount of backup data within and across the virtual machines. Avamar provides a high
level of integration with VMware for backing up virtual environments. Avamar integrates
with VMware VADP to provide image level backups using an Avamar-provided proxy for
backups and restores.

VMware backups can be centrally configured, scheduled and managed with Avamar
Administrator. Avamar Administrator also has the ability to browse the virtual machines in
the environment and display information for each machine. Using this information, backup
administrators can quickly identify virtual machines that need to be included in a protection
strategy.

NetWorker provides the NetWorker VMware Protection option for image-level backups to
deduplication storage. In this solution, an EMC Backup and Recovery appliance, also known
as a VMware Backup Appliance, is deployed in the vSphere server. VMware virtual machines
can be backed up without using backup agents inside the virtual machines. Backups are
stored directly to deduplicated storage, either backup appliance internal storage or to a
Data Domain device. Benefits include reducing the complexity of the backup environment,
reducing the impact of backups on production servers and reducing backup storage
requirements.

Using Data Domain storage for backups of virtual machines brings the benefits of
deduplication to virtual environments. Because many of the elements in virtual images are
the same, they deduplicate very well on Data Domain systems. This results in less disk
storage required to store and retain the backup data.

Remote offices pose unique challenges to backup and recovery. Because the environment is
distributed, backup data often needs to travel over a WAN. In addition to security concerns,
sending large amounts of data over a WAN can take a long time, leading to long backup
windows and slow restores. Sometimes, each remote site has their own and often different
backup solution, leading to a heterogeneous environment that is difficult to manage.

Avamar supports both local area network and wide area network connections. There is
minimal impact to network traffic and performance as, after initialization, only changes
travel over the networks. This means that the WAN limitations are reduced since not much
data is sent over this connection. Depending on the size of the environment, it may be
beneficial to add a small Avamar server to the remote site. This allows local backups and
restores. Data can be replicated between Avamar servers, as well, for added protection.
When replicating backup data from source deduplication storage to target, only
deduplicated data travels over the existing networks thus enabling fast, cost-effective
disaster recovery from deduplicated, disk storage.
With NetWorker, it is possible to deploy storage nodes and media at the remote site while
keeping the NetWorker server at the primary site. This allows backups to occur locally with
only a small amount of metadata traveling over the WAN. This keeps backup performance
high and restores can perform locally.

Data centers often have very large amounts of data. Administrators are always looking for
ways to reduce their data footprint, and the thought of storing additional copies of an
already large amount of data is not always attractive.

Also, datacenters may have critical databases or applications that must run at all times
without much impact. Running frequent backups that slow down production may not be
acceptable for the data center. In large datacenters, SAN connected storage arrays are
often used.

ProtectPoint uses the snapshot technology of the storage array to provide backups with
very little interference to a datacenter’s processes. Snapshot based backups are ideal for
busy databases and applications that cannot tolerate performance hits. Data is sent directly
over the SAN from the primary storage to the backup storage, so there is no impact on LAN
traffic.
ProtectPoint can use Data Domain for backup storage. Data Domain’s native deduplication
will greatly reduce the storage footprint of backup data. Although RecoverPoint can be
controlled through native Data base and application tools, it may also be managed through
NetWorker. If the customer has other backup needs, using NetWorker may be beneficial.

Providing backups for a Desktop/Laptop environment has unique challenges. There are
typically a large number of clients which often have redundant files between them. Clients
are not always available since they may be powered off during the backup period. Clients
may also be connecting from an external network. This leads to inconsistent backups. Also,
end-users are not typically trained in managing a backup restore solution, so frequent IT
requests are made in order to recover lost files.

Avamar Desktop/Laptop leverages Avamar for backup of Windows and Mac desktops and
laptops. When selected during client installation, an enhanced user interface for backup and
restore is installed on the client machine.

With Avamar Desktop/Laptop, end-users can restore their own data without requiring
backup administrator intervention. This frees up the backup administrator from dealing with
end-user recovery and allows end-users to instantly recover their data. With the interface,
end-users can also initiate on-demand backups of pre-defined datasets, or they may be
given permission to create their own datasets.

Avamar Desktop/Laptop is integrated with Active Directory/LDAP for end-user

authentication. Users are logged in to the interface using their active directory credentials.
The Avamar backup administrator does not need to add and maintain the end-user
accounts.
If the environment is running Microsoft Exchange, then this can also be backed up to the
Avamar, if needed.

Many businesses decide that managing their own infrastructure is not ideal. They may have
low IT administrative resources or knowledge, or their storage requirements are
unpredictable, making it hard to determine what hardware to invest in. Capital expenditures
for a small business can be crippling to building a new backup solution.

In many environments, the cloud can be a key component in a backup solution for some
environments. NetWorker has the ability to use cloud storage as a backup device. In this
scenario, a backup administrator would manage backups and restores through NetWorker,
but backup storage would be provided by a cloud resource.
Mozy is a backup solution that uses the Cloud for both backup storage and management.
Administrators do not need to manage a backup server because it is all done in the cloud.
