2025-2026
OUR
GUIDING LIGHT AND INSPIRATION
The healthcare system in the country is unable to meet the needs of the population because of many
factors, the most prominent one being the acute shortage of trained healthcare service providers.
Availability of human resources at all levels of the healthcare system is integral in moving towards the
larger goal of Universal Health Coverage for India.
Allied health professionals include individuals involved with the delivery of health or related services,
with expertise in therapeutic, diagnostic, curative, preventive and/or rehabilitative interventions. They
work in interdisciplinary health teams including physicians, nurses and public health officials to
promote, protect, treat and/ or manage a person(‘s) physical, mental, social, emotional, environmental
health and holistic wellbeing.
In the past decade, a fundamental shift has occurred in healthcare delivery, largely due to advances
in science and technology. It is now more evident than at any time in the past, that health care delivery
is no longer a prerogative of physicians and nurses. It is more of a team effort, drawing expertise of
both clinicians and non-clinicians. These professionals or health-service providers have been
collectively termed as Allied Health Professionals (AHPs). AHPs are key to health- sector reforms
in India, especially given the shortage of doctors and nurses in semi-urban and rural areas of the country.
There is a huge dearth of trained technologists/technicians in the system; advancement in technology in
recent time demands trained individuals who could provide reliable results in conjunction with patient
safety.
Allied health professionals are defined and interpreted differently across the globe. They have a critical
role and are the support pillars of the healthcare team. There are many professionals who are
trained to handle specific health problems and provide services in their area of expertise through
comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and/or treatment to promote recovery and improve quality of life.
Amrita Centre for Allied Health Sciences has a distinguished history of teaching Allied Health
professionals the latest, most advanced medical and surgical practices. Amrita, in fact, has been
training allied health professionals from throughout the country for over 25 years.
