S41 - FUEL OIL STORAGE AND DISTRIBUTION

PART 3 SPECIFICATION CLAUSES SPECIFIC TO S41

300.000 PRODUCTS/MATERIALS

300.001 PRESSURE EQUIPMENT DIRECTIVE/PRESSURE EQUIPMENT REGULATIONS:

 All equipment and assemblies which fall within the scope of the Pressure Equipment
Directive (PED) 2014/68/EU, must be tested by the manufacturer, and be certified as
compliant with the Directive. Such compliance shall be evidenced by displaying the
appropriate CE Mark on the equipment and assemblies.

 Only relevant equipment and assemblies certified as compliant will be permitted under this
specification, and any substitution put forward must also be compliant with the Directive.

300.005 STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS:

 Comply with the relevant requirements and recommendations of the Local Authorities
having jurisdiction.

 Comply with the pollution prevention guidelines for projects in locations where they are still
enforced by the local Environmental Agency.

 Comply with:

o Guidance in the Health and Safety Executive HSG176 on design and construction of
installations for the storage of flammable liquids.

o Code of practice for oil firing BS 5410-1 or BS 5410-2 or BS 5410-3 to suit particular
application.

 All relevant equipment to comply with OFTEC requirements for the application.

300.006 GENERAL (FUEL PUMPS):

 Comply with general clauses below:

o Pumps generally - reference Y20.1010

o Pump selection for efficiency/EC ecodesign requirements - reference Y20.1020

o Safety guards - reference Y20.1030

o Pump testing - reference Y20.1040

300.007 FUEL OIL CHARACTERISTICS:

310.000 WORKMANSHIP

310.005 GENERAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND TESTS:

 As appropriate to the particular project, comply where practically possible with the
requirements of the relevant parts of BS EN 12514 for the safety and corresponding tests for
plant, equipment and pipework within an oil supply installation to burners.

310.010 INSTALLATION OF OIL STORAGE TANKS:

 Install oil storage tanks in accordance with the following as applicable:

o BS 799-5, BS 5410-2 or BS 5410-1 for installations up to 45kW output capacity and


the manufacturer's recommendations.

310.020 INSTALLATION OF OIL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS:


 Install oil distribution systems in accordance with equipment manufacturers'
recommendations, the standards and relevant legislation listed in clause 300.005 and the
following as applicable to the particular project:

o Relevant OFTEC codes of practice installation recommendations and technical


information sheets.

o Relevant part of BS 5410.

310.030 INSTALLATION OF PUMPS:

 Install test and commission systems to comply with equipment manufacturer's


recommendations, BS EN 806-4.

8500-01001_…).

The document specifies that the fuel storage system includes a day-tank and a larger storage tank

120.080 FUEL STORAGE AND TRANSFER

A. Day-tank Construction:

 Closed cylindrical steel

 Inclined at least 3 degrees from horizontal

 Fitted with drain plug, inlet and outlet pipe connectors, and breather pipe

B. Day-tank breather pipe:

 Shall have replaceable paper air filter or breather caps with air filters

C. Day-tank instruments:

 Include float switch, solenoid valve, and dial-type level indicator

 To give alarm on over-fill and low-level

D. Day-tank Filling Pumps:

 Electrically operated, automatically started and stopped, duplex pumps

 Standby manual pump

 Installed on piping system between storage tank and one or more day-tanks for fuel transfer

 Motor shall be totally enclosed, fan-cooled, squirrel-cage induction type

E. Day-tank Connections:

 Seamless black steel pipes of same size as connection and braced to tank walls

 Vent connection shall not extend inside tank more than 20 mm

 A manual valve shall be provided on the fuel supply line to the genset

F. Fuel Lines:

 Heavy gauge, black seamless steel, to ISO/65 or equal

 Treated internally with corrosion resistant paint and with joints sealed with PTFE tape

 Plumber's twine or gasket sealing compound shall not be used

 Changes in direction and branching and jointing shall be with regular pipefitting

 Field fabricated and bent fittings shall not be used

G. Fuel Lines:

 Fuel feed line to day-tank shall have by-pass with stopcock

 Size of fuel return line from day-tank to main fuel tank shall be to manufacturer's
recommendations

H. Valves Generally:

 827.4 kPa (steam working pressure rating) and 1380 kPa cold water non-shock pressure
rating
