What are the roles in a theater production?

Play production offers many opportunities that may well find more stimulating and
exciting than acting. All activities involved in the design and construction of sets and
costumes, the handling of lightning equipment, and managing of affairs backstage and
in the front are of absorbing interest
When a play gets underway.

Who is a director?

The key figure in theater production is the

director. He or her principal aim is to reproduce
the playwright’s intentions as faithfully as he or
she must work to bring out the story through the
actors, the choreographer, stage manager, light
and set designers, and other resources at his or her
disposal. Ideally, he or she should be an excellent
actor, scenic artist, and stage “techie”, able to
handle technology, equipment, and human beings
with equal skill.

The director is the person upon whom the success or failure of the production
most largely depends. He or she is responsible for the unification of all production
elements. He or she must be able to delegate authority-to the backstage crew for
example, in order to be out front during rehearsals and the performance. He or she is
also responsible for the morale of the people in the production and must help them work
together for success of the play.

Who is a Stage manager? What are set, lighting, and sound design?

The stage manager is the architect of the performance

tasks are about structuring lights, structuri9ng a look its
also about coordination. The stage manager role is a
marriage of all the elements needed, while satisfying all
the requirements of the particular production.

The stage manager is in total control of the visual

aspects of the performance. He or she
works closely with the crew, and oversees
all the visual details. Often, his or her
concerns even go down to the costumes,
making sure the style and period of the play
are right for the look the director wants the
stage manager is known to cover the kind of
lighting, music, and sound effects that the
director wants for all the scenes in the
production. An example is the important
detail of synchronizing. Synchronized
sounds adds much to realism of the play, so
do the right sound effect or music. The stage manager also handles any and all
emergencies that may arise during the performance. A good stage manager is essential
to a smooth production.
Fortunately, this control is divided into many departments, under the direction of
the stage manager, and each person as certain responsibilities as enumerated in the
following:

1. Set designer/production designer

A production of a play largely depends on the set that a set designer and production
designer have prepared. The set includes all the
sceneries, furniture’s and props that the
audience sees on stage. It is the responsibility of
both the set designer and production to provide
the following:

• To give the audience an idea about the

concept of the production
• To provide the space that will fulfill the
requirement of the script
• To ensure a safe workplace for actors and
crew

2. Costume, mask, and accessories designer

Costume is also a visual element of theater.

Costumes aid in creating visually pleasing
and effective performance. They help create
atmosphere and defined character for
actors and actress so that their performance
would seem real for their audience.

In a way the costume designer

is a sociologist. He or she has to know
costumes, customs, manners-to know what
are being dealt with in terms of materials
and fabrics and colors for particular period
in a particular location at a particular time of year. The tasks cannot be
completed with a vague idea. The role needs specific training and knowledge.

3.Makeup artist

Makeup has several functions. It accentuates normal futures

so that they can be clearly projected to the audience, and it
helps to create a character. It also counteracts the
undesirable effects of artificial illumination. Amateurs are
also often more comfortable onstage if they can close their
own identity under face paint or makeup.
