Chapter 5 Karma Sanyasa Yoga (The Y
5.1
Arjuna said, "O Krishna, you praise,
Renunciation of action, in many ways,
And yet you also praise action,
Please tell me clearly, which is the better option."
5.2
Krishna said, "Both renunciation and action,
Lead to liberation, with satisfaction,
But of the two, action is better,
Than renunciation, O Arjuna, set her."
5.3
"One who neither hates nor desires,
Is ever free, and never tires,
They are a renunciant, O Arjuna,
Though engaged in action, they are one."
5.4
"Only the ignorant say that action,
And renunciation are different factions,
For the wise know that one who is devoted,
To either path, attains the same goal, promoted."
5.5
"The state attained by the renunciant,
Is also attained by the active adherent,
For one who sees renunciation and action,
As the same, sees the truth, with satisfaction."
5.6
"O Arjuna, renunciation is hard to attain,
Without action, and its chain,
But the wise, who are devoted to yoga,
Soon attain Brahman, and are free, aglow."
5.7
"One who is devoted to yoga,
And is pure in mind, and free from ego,
They control the senses, and see the Self,
In all beings, and in themselves."
5.8-9
"One who knows the truth, and sees,
That the senses move among sense objects, with ease,
But the Self remains unattached, and free,
They are not bound by action, eternally."
5.10
"One who performs action, without attachment,
And offers it to Brahman, with commitment,
They are not stained by sin, O Arjuna,
Just as a lotus leaf is untouched by water, as one."
5.11
"Yogis perform action, with the body, mind, and senses,
And intellect, without attachment’s pretenses,
For the sake of self-purification,
And attain liberation, with satisfaction."
5.12
"One who is devoted to yoga,
Renounces the fruits of action, and goes,
To eternal peace, while the unwise,
Attached to fruits, are bound, and rise."
5.13
"One who renounces all actions, in the mind,
And rests in the body, without being confined,
They are a renunciant, O Arjuna,
Though engaged in action, they are one."
5.14
"The Lord does not create action, or doers,
Nor does He create the fruits of actions, or their viewers,
But it is nature that acts, and is seen,
Through the gunas, and their screen."
5.15
"The Lord does not take on the sins,
Or the merits, of anyone, within,
For knowledge is covered by ignorance,
And beings are deluded, in their stance."
5.16
"But when ignorance is destroyed, by knowledge,
The Self is revealed, in its fullness,
Like the sun, which lights up the day,
And dispels the darkness, in its way."
5.17
"One whose intellect is fixed in the Self,
Whose mind is steady, and free from pelf,
They are a knower of Brahman, and are free,
From the cycle of birth and death, eternally."
5.18
"The wise see the same in a Brahmin,
Learned and humble, and in a cow, a dog, and a sinner,
For they see the Self in all beings,
And are free from duality, in their seeing."
5.19
"One whose mind is balanced, and steady,
In success and failure, and is ready,
They are a knower of Brahman, and are free,
From the bonds of action, eternally."
5.20
"One who is free from desire, and is content,
With the Self, and is not intent,
On external objects, they are wise,
And attain liberation, with open eyes."
5.21
"One who is free from attachment,
And whose mind is fixed in detachment,
They are not bound by action, O Arjuna,
And attain liberation, with enlightenment."
5.22
"One who is free from desire, and anger,
And whose mind is free from danger,
They are a knower of Brahman, and are free,
From the cycle of birth and death, eternally."
5.23
"One who is free from desire, and is content,
With the Self, and is not intent,
On external objects, they are wise,
And attain liberation, with open eyes."
5.24
"One whose happiness is within,
And whose pleasure is within,
And whose light is within,
They are a yogi, and attain Brahman, within."
5.25
"The sages, whose sins are destroyed,
And whose doubts are dispelled, and void,
They are devoted to the welfare of all,
And attain Brahman, beyond the wall."
5.26
"Those who are free from desire and anger,
And whose minds are controlled, and stronger,
They are knowers of Brahman, and are free,
From the cycle of birth and death, eternally."
5.27-28
"Shutting out external objects, and fixing,
The gaze between the eyebrows, and mixing,
The breath in the nostrils, and controlling,
The senses, mind, and intellect, and holding,
The goal of liberation, with determination,
They attain peace, and liberation."
5.29
"One who knows me as the enjoyer,
Of sacrifices and austerities, and the doer,
Of all actions, and the friend of all beings,
They attain peace, and are free, in their seeing."
