Department of Mathematics - CUI Attock

Terminal Examination Fall 2024

Course Title: Rings & Modules Course Code: MTH415

Total Marks: 50 Time: 0930–1230

Date: 15/01/2025 Class: BSM(VI-VII)

Attempt any ten questions. Each question carries equal points.

Everything you write (including any rough work) must be in the answer booklet.

1. Determine which of the following subsets are ideals in the ring Z ⊕ Z:

(i) I = {(a, a) | a ∈ Z} (ii) J = {(2a, 2b) | a, b ∈ Z}

(iii) K = {(2a, 0) | a ∈ Z} (iv) L = {(a, −a) | a ∈ Z}

2. Provide an example of

(a) a ring with seven ideals. (b) a ring with eight zero-divisors.

(c) a ring with thirty nilpotents. (d) a ring with four maximal ideals.

Justify your answer in each case.

3. Suppose that R is a commutative ring with unity such that x4 = x for all x ∈ R.

Prove that every prime ideal of R is a maximal ideal of R.

4. Prove that the ideal ⟨X 2 + 1⟩ is prime in Z[X] but not maximal in Z[X].

5. Show that if (m, n) = 1 then Zmn ∼

= Zm ⊕ Zn (as a ring).

6. Show that the polynomials given below are irreducible over Q.

(a) x5 + 9x4 + 12x2 + 6 (b) x4 + 3x2 + 3 (c) 21x3 − 3x2 + 2x + 9

(d) x4 + x3 + x2 + x + 1 (e) 3x5 + 15x4 + 20x3 + 10x + 20

7. Construct a field of order 81.

8. Show that in an integral domain, every prime is an atom. Give an example of an atom which is not
prime. Justify your answer.
9. Show that Z[X] is not a principal ideal domain.

10. Let R be an integral domain, M an R-module and let T or(M ) be the set of all torsion elements of
M . Prove that T or(M ) is an R-submodule of M .

11. Define torsion free module. Prove that every vector space over a field F , considered as an F -module,
is torsion free.

12. Let M be an R-module and let m ∈ M . Define the order ideal O(m). Consider Z10 = {0, 1, ..., 9} as
a Z-module. Find O(5) and O(6).

13. Answer the questions below and justify your answers in each case.

(a) For which values of n ∈ N, the abelian group Z6 ⊕ Z8 has a (unitary) Zn -module structure?

(b) How many (unitary) Z[i]-module structures can be defined on the abelian group Z65 ?
