CIGARETTE ADDICTION OF THE GRADE 9-10


STUDENTS OF LAJONG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN
SY.2022-2023
Background of the study
This study focused on the CIGARETTE ADDICTION OF THE GRADE 9-10
STUDENTS OF LAJONG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.CIGARETTE is the no.1 problem of the
school but not only the school but the whole PHLIPPINES .Smoking has risks not only for smokers
but also for non-smokers if smoking continuous at this pace, certain that smoking-related deaths
will increase. YOUTHS reasons for smoking include looking for excitement, getting away from
their problems and meeting their emotional and social needs. Especially because it is legal to sell
cigarettes, smoking addiction is the most common type among young people; and it is known that
on out of two young people who try smoking become addicted to.

14 -17 years old students smoke chesterfield and other brand of cigarettes despite efforts to
make them quite smoking or hindering their smoking ,individuals could not be prevented from
starting smoking or they could not to be made to quit smoking. Therefore, investigating the
reasons specially for youth to start smoking is important in that sheds light on precautions that can
be taken in this respects.

SMOKING is important health problem to the students. Individuals’ social life and life in
their circle in earlier ages shape their perspectives and beliefs in relation to smoking. Individuals
with positive attitudes towards smoking hove more tendency than non-smokers to smoke. Besides,
positive attitudes also cause supporting and arguing for smoking. Another study found that
smoking young people were less knowledgeable about the harmful effects of smoking than those
who had never smoked or who had given up smoking.in parallel to this, another study to the
students found that individuals who had smoking for reduction in self-efficacy beliefs. More than 15
students of GRADE 9-10 smoke. The number of cigarettes smoked a day was found in directly
proportional to age. The reasons for starting smoking was the circle of friends. According to the
OZCEBE (2008), having a friend who is smoker increase the risk for the young to start smoking 3-4
times. Apart from that, the participants also mentioned such reasons as stress, curiosity, pleasure,
emulation, and proving oneself to others, respectively. The students talked about separating from
their boyfriend/girlfriend, school environment, sorrow, examinations and boredom as the sources
of stress as the cause for starting smoking. They talked about entertainment, attracting interest and
enjoyment as the source of emulation; and they talked about their father, friends, and elder
brothers as the source of smoke twice. In addition to that, such factors as insufficient relations with
their family and copying others also facilitate young people to start smoking. Several studies
conducted emphasize that taking others as a model, immediate surrounding and friends are
influential in starting to smoke.
Students who smoke said that they mostly felt positive things such as relaxation, with

who felt relaxation made such descriptions as having a rest, calming down, fulfilling their
responsibility and like tea. Yet, some of the students also mentioned negative felling such as
something lacking, different, bad, obligation and need to quit. In addition to that the students who
said that they felt enjoyment while their smoking made statements such as “although I know it is
harmful”, “as a feeling obligation” and “fulfilling the responsibility”, on the other hand, the
students who felt bad made statements such as hopelessness, regret, and feeling good even trough
knowing that is bad. The findings obtained in this study are considered important in organizing
activities about education on smoking. Therefore, conducting further studies is important for
primary prevention for young people’s starting to smoke.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study attempts to answer the following research questions:

1) How cigarette affects to the students?

2) What are the students reasons for starting smoking ?

3) What do students feel while smoking?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims to:

2) To identify the effect of cigarette addiction to the students

3) To know if there a chance to quit smoking.

SCOPE AND DELIMTITATION


This study aims to understand the negative effects of cigarettes to the chosen students of grade 9-10
of LAJONG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
CIGARETTE ADDICTIUON who are the chosen students of grade9-10 will be given
questionnaires to fill out the in order the to learn more about the effects of cigarette to our health
and their potential a smoking cessation tool.

The respondents are4 the smoker from grade 9-10 will receive the questionnaires since they have
varied opinions based on their personal opinions.

As a result, the researcher will contact a specialist to obtain information about the study that will
serve as the basis for this investigation. Only the effects of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on health
were were the subject of this investigation.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This is study is truly important it's is because for the help of our study. Students will be aware about the bad
effects of CIGARETTES TO OUR HEALTH.
For Students; They will be be grow more as an individual who are matured enough to understand the bad
effects of cigarettes.
For Teachers; They will be on counseling the chosen student to learn about the bad effects of cigarettes.
For School; They School may know that some of their chosen student are smoking to take a good advice and
inspiration to quit smoking.
For Society; The society may know that some students of Sorsogon city are addict on smoking to take some
actions about this problem on cigarettes addiction.

METHODOLOGY

The aim of the study was to qualitatively asses the the attitudes towards smoking
addiction quitting and control among the chosen students of grade 9-10. An face to
face depth interview for grade 9 and 10 chosen students who are smoking and focus
group discussion comprising 5 students from grade 9 and 5 students from grade 10
was conducted with a guide and moderator which was an interview.

About 50% of the students had low;30% had moderate and 20% had high nicotine
dependency. Most of the students are started smoking by peer influence and
continued as it made them to socialize relapses during their quit attempt was mainly
due to work stress. Participants heard about the bad effects of cigarettes in our
health but were unsure of the features in it. They perceived that no changes will
happen if GOVERNMENT BANS production and selling of cigarettes products.
Also the commercial or the photo in the pack of cigarette have no use to the
smokers. Nicotine replacement therapy may help in quitting the habit.

The study concluded that the chosen student of grade 9-10 not only the chosen
students but all over the school who are smoking cigarettes status had high
NICOTINE DEPENDENCY with inadequate knowledge of smoking. I’m strongly
believed that the students not only the students but everyone can succeed him in
quitting the habit.
