a. MEASURING TOOLS

1. Pull-push Rule
A push pull rule is a measuring tape that coils into a compact case. It is used for
measuring long, short, straight lengths.
2. Ruler
A ruler is a straight-edged tool used for measuring length and drawing straight lines.
It's a fundamental tool in carpentry for marking precise measurements on wood.
3. Meter
A meter, or meter stick, is a tool used to measure length, and is also known as a
ruler, scale, or line gauge. Carpenters use a variety of measuring tools.
4. Try Square
A try square is special purpose square in wood- and metalworking used to mark or
measure material.

b. MARKING LINING TOOLS

1. Pencil
A basic tool for marking lines and transferring measurements. It's versatile and can
be used with various materials.
2. Marking Gauge
A tool that allows you to create parallel lines at a specific distance from an edge. It
consists of a beam with a point and a fence that can be adjusted to set the desired
spacing.
3. Chalk Line
A tool that creates a straight line by snapping a taut string coated with chalk. It's
commonly used for laying out large lines on floors, walls, and other surfaces.

c. TESTING TOOLS

1. Try Square
A tool used to check and create right angles. Common types include the try square
and the steel square.
2. Steel Square
A sturdy and durable square made of steel. It is used for accurately marking and
checking right angles in construction and woodworking projects.
3. Spirit Level
A tool that uses a sealed glass tube filled with liquid and a bubble to indicate a
horizontal or vertical level. Essential for ensuring surfaces are level and plumb in
construction and woodworking.

d. EDGE CUTTING TOOLS

1. Chisel
A sturdy knife with a sharp blade that can be used to cut, shape, and remove wood.
It's like a sculptor's tool for wood. Think of carving, making precise cuts for joining
wood pieces, or cleaning up rough edges.
2. Plane
A tool for smoothing and flattening wood. It has a blade that can be adjusted to
shave off thin layers of wood, creating a perfectly smooth surface. It's used for
everything from preparing wood for finishing to creating a precise thickness for a
piece of furniture.
3. Spoke Shave
This is a specialized tool for shaping and smoothing the spokes of wooden wheels. It
has a curved blade that allows for precise shaping of the spokes, making sure they're
the right size and shape for the wheel.

4. Cabinet Scrapper
This is a tool used to remove very thin layers of wood, creating a smooth, flat finish
on surfaces, especially for cabinets. It's like a mini-plane, but with a sharper, more
flexible blade. It's perfect for getting rid of those last tiny imperfections and creating a
flawless finish.

e. TOOTH-CUTTING TOOLS

1. Cross Cut Saw

This saw is designed to cut wood across the grain, creating a cut perpendicular to
the direction of the wood fibers. It has teeth that are angled to efficiently cut across
the grain, producing a clean, precise cut.
2. Rip Saw
This saw is designed to cut wood with the grain, creating a cut parallel to the
direction of the wood fibers. It has teeth that are angled to efficiently cut with the
grain, producing a straight, smooth cut.
3. Back Saw
This saw is a type of fine-toothed saw that has a stiff, reinforced back to prevent the
blade from bending during cutting. It is used for making precise, intricate cuts in
wood, such as dovetails or tenons.
4. Compass Saw
This saw is designed for cutting curves and circles. It features a blade that can be
adjusted to different radii, allowing you to cut precise curves and circles. It's often
used for cutting out intricate shapes or for making circular cuts in wood.
5. Turning Saw
This saw is used for cutting wood while it's rotating on a lathe. It features a thin,
flexible blade that is designed for cutting curves and shapes on the rotating wood. It's
used for creating decorative shapes and finishes on turned wood objects.
6. Coping Saw
This saw is designed for making intricate cuts in wood, especially for cutting out
curves and shapes that are too small or complex for other saws. It has a thin, flexible
blade that is held in a frame, allowing for precise control and maneuverability. It's
often used for cutting out decorative shapes, such as scrollwork or intricate patterns.
