CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Sports programs are essential for the mental and physical development of senior
highschool students, promoting positive growth in areas like resilience, teamwork, and
health. However, they also present challenges that require careful guidance to maximize
their benefits. Sports also reunite those who are interested in the program, where they
are socially active. Teenage development involves psychological and physiological
factors, and sports can help attain these needs. Additionally, sports keep an individual in
great physical and mental shape.
2
factor that may affect a student is burnout when they tend to be exhausted which leaves
them to be fatigued repeatedly. Stress and burnout are some of the bad effects why
some athletes are in bad shape mentally and physically which affects their academic
performance.
In the research of Narelle Eather, Levi Wade, Aurélie Pankowiak & Rochelle Eime
(2023) it is confirmed that participation in any program that involves sports is beneficial
for improving mental health and social outcomes. In the study of N. Leonte, Ofelia
Popesu (2016) Physical education and sports have real contributions to human
development. The instruction is an active process involving direct program and
responsibility to teens regarding their training which would lead them to grow and
eventually discipline themselves to be consistent. When student-athletes have a
persistent goal then it would encourage them to do better and certainly, there are some
circumstances that a coach would find a potential athlete to give scholarship and when
that occurs the student-athletes would be in consistent training and would acknowledge
their set goal to aim for bigger universities. Sports at an early age would prevent the
pupils from being involved in negative activities and would guide them into a healthy
lifestyle. In most cases those student-athletes who are involved in sports activities as
their hobbies and passion have the most successful lifestyle. In sports, it helps students
to look at life's success as they learn to prioritize responsibilities and open up new
opportunities. In some other cases, the responsibilities in sports would distract the
students and they would rather focus on being sporty rather than balancing both
academic and athletic performances.
3
A student's vision where they see that being an athlete is much easier to focus on to
escape academic responsibilities, would be a downgrade for their development through
their longing career. Sports also involved ego and pride, which athletes consumed
because they saw the rivalry around them and realized that being one of the achievers
and winners is far from being modest. Sports could also be a hindrance to
self-improvement due to the amount of hard work and consistency that would need to
be involved for the student-athletes to balance both school and sports. Sports affect the
social status of student-athletes since their behavior in the field of sports is dependent
on how their colleagues and supporters will see the athlete's performance and attitudes.
Physical frames the student-athletes are also at risk whenever they are involved in
sports since body movements are the critical utilization for better performance inside the
field, Injuries are one of the major hindrances that may lead student-athletes into
physiological problems such as permanent fractures and joint dislocation. Sports are
involved in living up to the expectations of their teammates and supporters when
participating in sports, which can lead to a loss of interest and enjoyment in the sports.
Sports have unusual and unknown injuries which may lead to bigger problems where it
would reduce the growth of development. Overtraining student-athletes just to meet the
demand to succeed would lead them to health fatigue. Physiological stress also has its
effects on human development since repetitive injuries create stress and anxiety that
may cause them to fear sports activities. The schedules and sudden training for
students are also the barriers between your academic and sports career. It would be
challenging for the student-athletes to compress their schedules into one where each
schedule would counteract each other.
4
Sports have some developments where it would show a different fear factor when
certain students are involved in activities that may affect development. An unhealthy
sports culture could affect the health of the athletes since cheating is involved. Bullying
and peer pressure are faced by many student-athletes from their teammates or
opponents that would impact their social development and self-esteem and may cause
anxiety or depression. Psychological instability is created by the student athletes'
performance that would cause them to win or lose, it affects their ability to cope with the
different challenges and obstacles in life. Sports create a place for emphasizing the
athlete's appearance since competitions involve weights where different changes for the
athlete's appearance are involved that would cause the student-athletes insecurity and
anxiety. Not only do sports provide fun and entertainment but they also give different
downgrades to a pupil's growth and development. According to the research of
Merz/Embody Admin (2024), participation in sports not only benefits our bodies but also
our minds. When the youth learn a new sport, our brain undergoes what we call
neuroplasticity, which refers to the ability to grow and evolve. The research shows that
the level of growth stimulated by trying out a new sports activity is much more
comparable to learning a new language. According to Daekyun Oh(2024), considering
social status and peer pressure, sports programs provide the setting for counteracting
socially vulnerable youths, and sports create experiences that are highly productive for
social growth.
In the study of Nicoleta LEONTE & Ofelia POPESU, (2016). Sports are necessary to
provide productivity and creativity, self-esteem, and a sense of belonging to the
community. According to Saksham Gupta(2019), too much sports may influence the
athlete into an unpatterned behavior, some athletes may do undesirable activities to
convince themselves that the conclusion justifies the means that they have chosen. Few
sports contain a culture of violence where barbaric acts are in and out in the
competition, some copycats may influence the young athletes. Sports show undefined
signs that affect the growth of students where they are harmful to their surroundings and
self-development.

CHAPTER 2
This chapter aims to provide the literature and studies, which are significant to present
the study. A synthesis of a review of literature by the present study was also included in
this chapter. This study generally concentrates on the role of sports in human
development and what are the factors, and skills to improve in this chapter. The
literature of this study comes from journals, articles, and electronic materials such as
PDFs or Ebooks foreign and local that are believed to be useful in the concerned study.
Variable 1: Sports
10
According to Malm C, Jakobsson J, Isaksson (2019) sports have their own
positive and negative effects on health. Positive effects can be acquired through
physical activities, which is important for sports. Sports develop secondary effects that
also provide health benefits, such as psychological and physiological for both old and
young, personal development for later that may consume less alcohol. For those who
know sports, diets, exercise, and health can be improved. Negative effects have a risk of
failure that causes poor mental health, risk of injury, eating disorders, burnout, and
exercise-induced gastrointestinal tract discomfort. In terms of sports, there is
psychological and physical abuse. Negative factors are common for elite athletes, where
they balance the maximum performance and negative effects. Sports' role has been
increasingly valued through the years in society, not only for an individual but also for
public health. Sport can be spontaneous and be defined as an exercise subset
undertaken by an individual or a team.
Based on Saharan, A (2022) research, students are now involved in different types
of sports activities. With the extended look and provided provision surrounded by their
region, students would choose a high-quality game that suits them. There are numerous
barriers to why students stop from getting active in sports. These include where most
students prefer to play online games rather than real fields. As this sector becomes
international without restriction students tend to live their life with technologies. As sport
is a factor in having a good quality of life, students must be persuaded to join sports
activities for their benefit that contribute to a good quality of life. Getting support from
governments and private organizations on sports activities, more and more financial
support may pull the likings of the students for sports. Students must participate in
sports activities in order not only to benefit but also to reveal the impact. Sports promote
good health, have better stamina and are healthier than other individuals. Students who
are involved in sports are usually cheerful and confident. Sports are sustainable
development to avoid chronic diseases such as obesity and heart problems.
11
To conclude, to improve their quality of life, leisure time must be spent in the right way
that may help them with their health, facilities must be provided for sports where some
students have their interests in that certain sport where they should be gaining attention
for potential and attentiveness.
According to the result of the research, sports promote positive habits that help the
individual to grow and develop well-being. According to Edu, L. (2023, February 8) if a
child spends a long time studying, their physical activity is undeveloped and restricted.
Poor fitness is a big disadvantage to a child's growth. Participating in sports develops
the child’s communication and coordination skills. Sports provide a platform for the
student to interact and socialize with other individuals. Sports help the child to hold and
control their emotions which can boost their emotional development. Sports challenge
the emotions to stabilize and perform better. Sports will help you with leadership skills
and would develop you to guide your teammates and it allows the children to take up
12
leadership roles. Sports teaches discipline. Sports contain dedication and determination
where a certain goal requires hard work. Sports not only provide physical growth but
also mental growth for an individual. Sports help you to create better time management.
All the skills developed through sports may help with the child's academic performance.
In conclusion, being athletic could be a helping hand for your education where it aids
holistic improvement to a person where the outcomes could be the overall personality.
Sports have educational benefits that go beyond physical.
In the findings of Perkins, E., Hartman, J., Johnson, J., & Strand, B.(2024) that parents
push their children to specialize in a single sport where at a young age it would be the
negative outweighs the positive that may affect the athlete later in life. The intense
desire for talent and recognition may overwhelm the athlete to push further which
causes pressure and social competitiveness. In a study of 35,000 highly trained Russian
athletes, only 0.14% reached a high-level status. Many senior high school students want
to push further to achieve high-level recognition wherein repeated burnout and injuries
are the effects. The National Council of Youth Sports reported that 60 million children
ages 6 to 18 participated in organized sports. Nowadays, traditional sports have become
year-round where there is high intensity and fewer breaks. Specializing in sports does
not require one's body to recover from repeated activities and high-intensity training. In
conclusion, there must be unstructured play to improve an athlete's motor skills
development. Athletes must be encouraged to participate in a variety of sports to find
out what they enjoy. An individual who specializes in single sports finds that they
participate less in unstructured free play with peers. Sports must have guidelines where
a certain hour of activity must depend on their age.
13
As stated by Warangal, D. (2024) Sports are a powerful tool for building a student's
character and personality. Sports contain talents and it can be useful to help an
individual grow further. Sports is not about winning or losing, it's about the story and
journey that you may create and encounter throughout your life. Co-curricular activities
about sports prove that a student may grow professionally. Students learn about
sportsmanship that shows respect to peers who may interact. The outcome of
competitive sports must be disregarded where students validate the sportsmanship
character growth. Sports creates a good character where it strengthens the weak spots.
Being resilient and persistent are the outcomes of the sport once dedication meets
talent. Sports should be one of the major parts of a student's life. Sports contain different
effects and benefits on a student's life for their character growth and may depend on
how they will be utilized throughout their passion. Overall sports present inner talent,
hard work, and growth as they are a major part of a student's life not only for physical
growth but also for mental. According to Ghildiyal, R. (2015) Sports help each individual
to build character, and also teach strategic thinking, analytical thinking, and leadership.
Sports are a learning experience and help boost confidence. Of all who take up sports,
only one may eventually become a champion, but all will be winners. Sports has helped
and the principles of sports continue to help athletes through difficult times. Sports help
students study better, and improve concentration, problem-solving, and memory. Playing
sports or engaging in extracurricular activities play an important part in one's character
and personality development. One develops management skills, deliberation skills,
communication skills, convincing skills, conflict management, and confidence.
14
According to Gary, J. M., & Rubin, N. S. (2016) During the summer of 2016, global
attention will be directed toward the athletes representing their nations at the Olympic
and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It will be filled with amazement at the
superior achievements of these remarkable athletes. Therefore, it teaches and promotes
friendship and cooperation to all the athletes as soon as they play in the fields rather
than having conflict zones. ″Sports aims for Goals″ as said in the UN chronicle.
According to a healthcare article, many athletes do better academically. They said that
playing a sport requires a lot of time and energy. Some people may think this would
distract student-athletes from schoolwork. However, the opposite is true. Sports require
memorization, repetition, and learning skill sets that are directly relevant to class work.
Also, the determination and goal-setting skills a sport requires can be transferred to the
classroom. Fighting for a common goal with a group of players and coaches teaches you
how to build teamwork and effectively communicate to solve problems. This experience
is helpful when encountering problems at work or home.
15
Variable 2: Human Development
According to Diop, M. (2024, March 16). Sports and play can have a big impact on skills
development, human development, and educational potential. Based on the blog that I
read for you to promote human development you must bet on sports. On the far side of
athletic activities, coaches can be good instructors for good hygiene, habits such as
hand washing and nutrition, which can also have significant public health benefits.
Reviving school sports in elementary school, particularly in the most penniless areas
where children do not have access to sports infrastructure or physical education
programs is an investment for life. Like young boys playing soccer in Namibia. Martial
arts taught them the importance of not giving up while running and kept them focused.
In the field of international development, sports can be a powerful tool. Given the built-in
values of teamwork, fair play, building self-esteem, and equal opportunities for boys and
girls. That′s why human development and skills development can be a big factor in
sports.
According to Popesu, N. L. &. O. (2016). Human Development has been a big factor
and the backbone of social and economic development. Physical education and sports
have a real contribution to human development. This sustainable process emphasizes,
firstly, that development is made for humans, involving their participation in achieving
economic results. Consequently in increasing the quality of life. Young athletes are
instructed in physical education to have an active process involving the direct
responsibilities of their training. From the point of view of the relations between physical
education and human development, all these are necessary to ensure productivity and
creativity, self-esteem, and the sense of belonging to a community.
16
According to Anthony N. Turner, PhD1; Chris Bishop (2018) all teams in sports must
aim to develop a human development-centred high-performance model for sports. It
also says that human development and skills development play a big factor in sports.
And has a real contribution to human development, however, a model can unite a team
towards a shared vision and a clear sign of why the performance programs exist. It also
recognizes the standards of an analytical approach to establishing a training system.
Thereby ensuring objectivity and promoting best practices can improve your skills in
sports. The model can support and promote a comprehensive, whole person-centered
approach, where it is no longer acceptable to seek the spoils of sports.
According to Ivan Sandanski, (2023). Engaging in sports activities and events in higher
education has an impact on human development and physical, and social growth.
Sports life skills like discipline, teamwork, and leadership, while building self-esteem
and resilience. They also have a sense of community and support emotional and social
well-being. By encouraging healthy habits, and cooperation, higher education
institutions can leverage sports to empower students, enhance their potential, and foster
social capital.
17
School sports activities and events play a crucial role in engaging students in physical
activity. However, the full potential of these events offers benefits.According to Edwards,
Michael B., (2015). Global health policies prioritize population health and disease
prevention. Individual-focused strategies have limitations, sparking interest in
community-level approaches. Public health researchers and practitioners increasingly
focus on community-level interventions. The enhancement of community capacity has
become an approach to promoting health. The development of community-level health
depends on the strength of the community. Sport can play a vital role in community
development through the Sport for Development framework. Sport has potential as a
tool for enhancing community capacity. However, the relationship between sport and
community capacity is not well understood. Further research is needed to explore how
sports can boost community capacity. Unlocking sport's potential to enhance community
capacity can improve population health outcomes.
18
According to Philip et al., (2023). Soccer peer coaching and training opportunities
develop skills and foster community cohesion. These initiatives build individuals,
groups, and communities for positive change. Soccer coaching knowledge empowers
participants and volunteer coaches for social impact. The social movement shows how
soccer can mobilize individuals for collective action. By sharing knowledge and skills,
soccer programs can support sustainable community development. Empowering local
coaches and players fosters community social change. Soccer-based initiatives
promote social and collective growth. Community-focused programs leverage soccer for
holistic development. Volunteer coaches and participants become positive changes
through soccer. Sustainable sports development programs rely on local knowledge and
action. According to a Health Direct article, sports will enrich your child's life with
physical activity and new skills. Organized sports bring fun and excitement to your
child's life. Beyond fitness, sports offer benefits for your child's well-being. It includes
sports social skills, emotional intelligence, and resilience. It will learn valuable life skills
through sports participation. Sports help children cope with life's ups and downs in
healthy ways. Teamwork and camaraderie promote social connections and friendships.
Sports participation enhances emotional well-being and self-esteem. It will develop life
skills like discipline. Through sports, your child will grow physically, emotionally, and
socially. According to the UN Article. Sport plays a vital role in promoting human
development, well-being, and sustainable societies. Physical activity improves mental
health and overall quality of life. Sport fosters social connections, community
engagement, and inclusive societies. Participation in sports enhances self-esteem,
confidence, and resilience. Physical education promotes lifelong learning, skill
development, and personal growth. Sport-based initiatives address global challenges
like obesity, inequality, and social isolation. The psychological benefits of sports include
reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. Sport promotes sustainable development
through social, economic, and environmental well-being. Investing in sports supports
community development and social cohesion. Empowering individuals through sport
contributes to a more healthy, and more peaceful world.
19
Synthesis
Sports plays a crucial role in our lives, it offers a lot of benefits that we can receive or
have. Sports are often viewed as bare entertainment and can have a big impact on
human development. This synthesis searches through the many sides or ways in which
sports contribute to physical, social, and emotional growth. Sports can help you
enhance your physical fitness through regular participation, and improve cardiovascular,
and flexibility. It also improves your concentration and focus, sports demands
heightened attention and focus. This also helps you to learn, maintain, and improve
teamwork and cooperation when you're in training, sports teach valuable lessons about
it. And the most important part is that sports can help develop leadership skills such as
decision-making, problem-solving, and motivation for other people. Though sports offers
multiple benefits, it′s very important for us to acknowledge the potential negative effects
of it. Like, Social and Academic Impact can consume the time that you have for school.
The time required for training and competition can limit your time for your academics.
And one major factor that can affect you is the pressure and stress, the intense
pressure to perform can lead to burnout. For us to avoid this kind of situation, here are
some conclusions that we can offer. In conclusion, sports can serve as a powerful tool
for physical and psychological development.. By promoting physical fitness, social skills,
and emotional well-being, sports improve and balance every individual. As such, sports
should be encouraged and combined into educational frameworks to maximize their
positive impact on humans. On the other hand, Human Development and Sports are
interrelated with each other. Shaping individuals both physically and mentally is how
sports contribute to human development, firstly Physical development and regular
physical activity enhance your health. Time management can balance your sports,
academics, and other commitments which helps develop time management skills. In
conclusion, by engaging in physical activity, athletes not only improve their physical
health but also enhance their mental, social, and emotional well-being.
