CHEMICAL SAFETY
Chemical safety is the practice of handling chemicals in a safe manner, minimizing the hazard to public
and personal health. Chemical Safety is achieved by undertaking all activities involving chemicals in
such a way as to ensure the safety of human health and the environment. It covers all chemicals, natural
and manufactured, and the full range of exposure situations from the natural presence of chemicals in
the environment to their extraction or synthesis, industrial production, transport use and disposal.
Chemical safety is a necessary component of handling hazardous materials. A variety of hazardous
chemicals are commonly found in the workplace. It's important to understand the substances that fall
under this classification, as they can have an adverse effect on human health and cause harm to property
and the environment.
Hazardous chemicals are substances that can cause adverse health effects such as poisoning, breathing
problems, skin rashes, allergic reactions, allergic sensitization, cancer, and other health problems from
exposure.
Many hazardous chemicals are also classified as dangerous goods. These can cause fires, explosions,
corrosion, and hazardous reactions if not handled safely. Objective:

CHEMICAL SAFETY
SCORE: ___________________________________
The following are common chemicals that are used in the laboratory. Refer on the SDS of
these chemicals and complete the table below. For the type of hazard, write the LETTER only.
II. Identify TEN unsafe behaviors in the chemistry laboratory cartoon below. Explain why this is
an unsafe behavior in the chemistry laboratory.

1.The girl's hair was on fire, which might result in severe injury.
2. The guy bothers the girl by showing her his phone.
3. The girl is attempting to sip the liquid in the beaker while eating inside the laboratory.
4. In the eye wash station, the girl drinks water.
5. The man is holding a shattered piece of glass without wearing safety gloves.
6. The trashcan is on fire, which could cause harm and injury to anyone within.
7. Instead of using this in chemical handling, an individual blows the glove.
8. The man utilizes a trumpet, which may disturb others while doing an experiment, and his usage of a
skateboard may result in the destruction of laboratory apparatus.
9. The girl is washing the electric equipment. She did not unplug the cord before washing.
10. Two individuals are having fun, but the girl is unaware of the broken glass that could harm her.
III. Briefly answer the following questions.
1. What is chemical safety and why is it important?
- Chemical safety covers all rules, procedures, and practices aimed to reduce the danger of being
exposed to potentially harmful substances. This encompasses the dangers of chemical exposure
to those handling the chemicals, as well as the surrounding environment and the communities
and ecosystems inside it.
4. Before disposing any chemicals, what are the things that should be considered? Why?
- Chemicals, like other types of waste, can be damaging to human health or the environment,
either instantly or over time. Chemical waste, like other hazardous waste, must be processed,
disposed of, or repurposed in a safe manner. Any home, garden, pool, or garage items
labeled 'corrosive,' 'oxidizing agent,' 'toxic,' or 'flammable' are deemed hazardous and should
be collected and disposed of by a regulated hazardous chemical waste disposal service.
