The document discusses reservoir modeling and simulation using finite difference approximations. It presents an example involving a point-centered grid system in a horizontal reservoir, detailing the application of both implicit and explicit finite difference methods to solve a partial differential equation governing the flow system. The document concludes with calculations of pressure at specific points and prompts a discussion on the acceptability of the results and potential improvements.

RESERVOIR MODELLING & SIMULATION

Application of Finite Difference Approximation

(Examples)

1
Example 1
A point-centered grid system in a horizontal reservoir is shown in Figure
1. The initial reservoir pressure is 3500 psia. The pressure at the
boundaries BC and CD drops to 3000 psia, while the pressure at the
boundaries AB and DA is maintained at the initial reservoir pressure.
The flow system is governed by the following partial differential equation
(PDE): 2 2
 P  P 1 P
2
 2 
x y  t

a) Base on the PDE, identify type of the flow system in this reservoir.
b) Apply the implicit finite difference approximation to this PDE.
c) Apply the explicit finite difference to this PDE.
d) Calculate the pressure at points 1, 2, 3, and 4 using the explicit
finite difference approximation, then discuss the results. Given:
x  y  1000 ft ,  5  10 5 ft 2 / Day , and t  5 Days
