TECHNIQUES IN USING PICTURES

II. One Picture – A Sequence of Tasks

1. Discuss and answer: What is happening in the picture? Write down words and phrases.

a.
Celebration
b. Wedding
c. A family
union
d. Having
fun with
bubbles
e. Taking a picture
f. Smiling
g. Posing
h. Getting out of the Church
i. Holding hands

2. Discuss: How old are the people getting married?, Do their parents want them to get married?, What jobs do the
two people have?, Will the couple have children? When? How many?, Have you ever been to a wedding? Was it
like this one?
I would say that they are around 27-30 years, probably yes because they look very happy, I think he is a chef an
she is a nurse. They will probably have children in the coming years, at least two. I have been to two weddings, it
was different in both weddings, but It was the same joy, excitement and the environments were very beautiful.

3. Read a paragraph that describes the traditional wedding. Circle which sentence makes the main point. Underline
the details the writer includes to show the reader why he can make that point.

Debbie Johnson and Frank Willett celebrated their marriage with a classic
ceremony last weekend. Debbie adorned herself in her family's heirlooms,
donning her grandmother's veil and her mother's elegant white satin gown. To
complete the tradition of "something old, something new, something borrowed,
something blue," she wore her sister's necklace and carried a lovely bouquet of
blue flowers. The bridal party consisted of six bridesmaids dressed in long,
flowered blue lace gowns. Frank and Debbie's father looked dashing in
traditional morning suits, featuring a black jacket paired with gray pants. The
couple exchanged vows in a charming church ceremony, followed by a reception
hosted by the bride's parents at their residence, where they welcomed 100 guests to celebrate their special
day.

4. Image that you are the bride 6 months before the wedding, describe how your wedding will be. Then rewrite the
paragraph from #3 in the future tense.

a. Describe your wedding.

For my wedding, I would want something elegant, but also genuinely fun. I pictured a modern art museum
or a beautifully restored old building, decorated with soft colors, gorgeous flowers, and warm, inviting
lighting. I would like it to feel intimate, just close friends and family. During the ceremony, we would share
our own personal vows, making it truly ours. The reception would be a feast for the senses, with delicious
food and amazing music, a jazz band to start, then a DJ to get everyone dancing. Instead of a traditional
cake, I think we could have a dessert bar filled with mini-pies and custom ice cream flavors, which would be
a huge hit! My dress would be simple and classic, and I would feel so confident and happy. We could even
surprise everyone with a funny, choreographed dance with my bridesmaids that would have everyone
laughing. A photo booth with silly props would capture some hilarious moments, and late-night snacks like
mini-burgers and truffle fries would keep the energy high on the dance floor. I would want a wedding that
felt like 'us' classy, but with plenty of laughter and joy, and I think we could make it perfect.
b. Rewrite the paragraph from # 3 in the future tense.

Royal Wedding Thrills the World!

A Day of Fairytale Romance and National Celebration

London erupted in a symphony of cheers and church bells

as Prince William, second in line to the British throne, and
Catherine Middleton exchanged vows at Westminster
Abbey on April 29, 2011. The world watched, captivated, as
the couple embarked on their journey as husband and wife.
Catherine, radiant in an exquisite ivory and white satin
gazar gown designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander
McQueen, walked down the aisle to meet her prince, who
was dashing in his red Irish Guards uniform. The historic
abbey, adorned with a stunning avenue of English Field
Maple trees, provided a majestic backdrop for the
ceremony, which was conducted by the Archbishop of
Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams. Prince Charles and Kate Middleton

The wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton was a spectacle of unforgettable
moments. Catherine's exquisite dress, with its intricate lace and elegant design, immediately
captured global attention, setting a new standard for bridal fashion. The iconic balcony
appearance at Buckingham Palace, highlighted by their affectionate kisses, became a cherished
moment for millions of viewers worldwide. The presence of the royal family, including the Queen
and the Duke of Edinburgh, underscored the event's significance. With an estimated two billion
people tuning in globally, the wedding became a historic, shared experience. The ceremony's
music, a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary pieces, provided a moving and memorable
soundtrack. The entire event was a blend of romance, tradition, and national celebration, leaving a
lasting impression on all who witnessed it.

6. Write to a group of American students about a typical traditional wedding in our country.
A traditional Honduran wedding is a vibrant and deeply familial celebration, often centered around the
Catholic faith. The ceremony itself typically takes place in a church, where the couple exchanges vows
in a service that can be quite elaborate, featuring traditional hymns and blessings. Following the
ceremony, the reception is a lively affair, characterized by an abundance of food and music. Guests can
expect a feast of Honduran cuisine, including dishes like baleadas, tamales, and roasted meats,
accompanied by rice, beans, and an array of desserts. Music plays a crucial role in the festivities, with
live bands or DJs providing a mix of traditional Honduran rhythms and popular Latin American tunes,
encouraging guests to dance and celebrate.

A unique aspect of Honduran weddings is the "Hora Loca," or "Crazy Hour," a late-night burst of revelry
where guests don masks, hats, and other festive props, transforming the reception into a carnival-like
atmosphere. Gift-giving is customary, with guests often presenting the newlyweds with monetary gifts
to aid them in their new life together. The celebration typically extends late into the night, reflecting
the Honduran emphasis on social gatherings and shared joy. Attire for guests is generally dressy,
though comfort is also considered, particularly for dancing. The overall atmosphere is one of warmth,
hospitality, and a strong sense of community, making a Honduran wedding a memorable cultural
experience.
