Course Description
This course is designed specifically for engineering students of the First Year of 4Y curriculum. This
year-long course aims at providing an induction to the School of Engineering for first year students. It
will cover topics such as learning and time-management skills, purposes of university and
engineering education, and planning for personal and professional development. Graded PP, P or F.

Prerequisite(s)
For Year 1 Engineering students only.

Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes


Objectives
 Understand the purpose of university education
 Strengthen student’s self-understanding in terms of character and learning habit
 Acquire time management and study planning skills
 Cultivate the ability to think critically and ethically
 Develop as a self-regulated learner
 Engage in personal and professional development

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Establish a support network within the clan by building and maintaining a positive relationship
with peer mentors and faculty advisors;
2. Identify School of Engineering as the “academic home” and demonstrate a sense of belonging to
one’s clan;
3. Articulate the meaning of Engineering Education and students’ identity as engineering students;
4. Develop an education plan that fits one’s interests and/or goals, and academic program
requirements, and based on the above;
5. Form the intellectual habits that lead to lifelong learning.

Course Syllabus

The course will consist of several components and delivery mechanisms. There are compulsory
components which focus on articulating students to think about the meaning of University and
Engineering Education and Engineering Design.

A wide variety of Professional Development Seminars are offered throughout each semester; details
of the seminars are announced through Canvas. Students should attend those which draw their
interest or help one to find his/her direction. Students may also participate in workshops and/or site
visit to gain hands-on experience/understand the industries.

A free format on meeting with a School-level Faculty Advisor (SFA), appointments can be made
through an online platform. Every student is assigned to a School-level Faculty Advisor. Students
shall make use of this meeting by seeking advice on their academic plans. The meeting could be
conducted face-to-face or online according to the faculty’s decision.

Students need to meet their corresponding peer mentors to discuss about the study plan and major
preference as well.

Assessment
In order to PASS this course, students must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Attend two Compulsory Lectures
a. Fall semester - University Education
b. Spring semester - Engineering Design Concept

2. Meet with Your Peer Mentor


a. Fall Semester – Study Plan and Intake Survey
b. Spring Semester – Revised Study Plan and Major Preference

3. Meet with Your Faculty Advisor


a. Fall Semester – Individual Meeting (20minutes)
[For ALL students]
b. Spring Semester – Individual Meeting [Optional for students with no academic issue]

4. Attend at least 3 hours of approved professional development seminar/activity in EACH


semester.

*Students will receive a “PP” grade after Fall term if they complete the requirements of Fall.
