This study assesses the knowledge, attitude, and utilization of clinical research findings among nurses at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. A survey of 136 nurses revealed slow transfer of research findings into practice, highlighting the need for improved training to bridge the theory-practice gap. The findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests, with recommendations for enhancing nurses' engagement with clinical research.

ABSTRACT

Nurses make a positive difference every day and continue to shape the future of healthcare through
planning, implementation and dissemination of quality research studies. The practice of nursing is
determined by the nurses' clinical experience as well as clinically relevant research knowledge,
willingness to apply research to practice, and the skills to do so. The application of the nursing
research findings is one of the most important

indicators of development in the nursing profession, which leads to providing efficient and

effective patient care and improving the quality of nursing care. According the result of some

studies, transferring the research findings to the nurses’ practice and education in

the world has been slow and sometimes unsuccessful. This study is aimed at assessing the
knowledge, attitude, and utilisation of Clinical research findings among nurses in the University of
Calabar Teaching Hospital.

A Survey design was adopted for the study. A total of 136 respondents were sampled out of the 205
population of nurses in the eight (8) major wards in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital
which was used for this study.

A self-structured questionnaire was developed and used to elicit information from the respondents
and was analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in tables, graphs, and charts. The two
hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistical tool at 0.05 level of significance with chi-square
calculated value of 0.544 and 0.932 and chi-square tabulated value of 0.5991 and 3.843 respectively.
The Everette Roger's diffusion theory of innovation was used to further validate the research
findings. It was therefore recommended that training of nurses on how to bridge the theory practice
gap should be encouraged.

Keywords: clinical research, research utilization, nursing, nurses' knowledge, nurses' attitude.
