LC 2: Strive to
live and witness The Four Marks of the Church
the holiness of
God by In the Nicene Creed, we profess, "We believe in one, holy, catholic,
spreading the and apostolic Church": these are the four marks of the Church. They
Gospel and are inseparable and intrinsically linked to each other. Our Lord
acting morally in Himself in founding the Church marked it with these characteristics,
their daily which reflect its essential features and mission. Through the
thoughts, words continued guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Church fulfills these mark
and deeds in 1. CHRIST CALLS THE CHURCH TO BE UNITED AS
loving service as ONE (The Church is One)
individuals and Sacred Scripture
as members of John 17:21> “That they may be one, as You, Father, are in me
Christ’s Church and I in you, may they also be one in Us. “
The Church is One because of . . .
Success • its source, the Holy Trinity, a perfect unity of three Divine
Criteria: Persons
• its founder, Jesus Christ, who came to reconcile all mankind
 I am aware • its “soul,” the Holy Spirit, who dwells in the souls of the
and will faithful, unites all the faithful into one communion of
strive the believers, and guides the Church
spreading of
The “oneness” of the Church is also visible. As Catholics we
Gospel. are united . . .

• in our Creed and our other teachings (doctrine)

• one in the common celebration of worship, especially in the
celebration of the sacrament (worship)
• in loving service of the people of God, and charity which is
the gift of God, made visible in the bonds of communion in
the Church (morals)
• in the hierarchical structure based on the Apostolic
Succession preserved and handed on through the Sacrament
of Holy Orders
• There is “one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to
the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
one God and Father of all” (Ephesians 4:4–6).
• “Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one
body, for we all partake of the one loaf” (1 Corinthians
10:17).
• Jesus had promised at the outset that “there will be one flock,
one shepherd” (John 10:16).

Wounds to Unity- official breaks with the Church communion

Divisions and disagreements have been a part of the Church from
the beginning. With three major denomination branch, Christianity
is the most divided religion

1. Apostacy- first three centuries of the Church it was illegal to

be a Christian and the punishment could be death.
 Martyrdom ~ many martyrs could escape death if they
renounced Christianity.  Those that didn’t renounce we
call martyrs but those that did became apostates.  They
would need to publicly confess and do penance to be
welcomed back into the Church.
2. Schism- refusal of unity with the Pope)
  Those that are a part of schismatic Churches we call
separated brethren.
  Those Churches have elements of holiness and truth
within them to a degree.
  We pray for the return to Catholic unity amongst
these churches
3. Heresy-  a deliberate and persistent denial of a truth of the
faith taught by the Church  Catholic doctrine comes from
revealed truths from Christ entrusted to his Church.
  Heresy is the denial or changing of these teachings,
known as the Deposit of Faith.
  The word Heresy comes for the Greek word meaning
“choice” and means that the person is picking and
choosing their beliefs instead of accepting what Jesus
revealed.
Example of HERESY in the Early Church:
1. GNOSTICISM- comes from Greek word gnosis
meaning “knowledge”  refers to a belief that
salvation is achieved by through secret knowledge. 
It taught that there were two gods: one Good and the
other evil.
+  Today’s “new age” movement is a modern form of
Gnosticism.
a.  It teaches that hidden powers are released through
crystals and incantations.
b.  Fortune-telling, horoscopes, zodiac signs and tarot
cards are practices of new agers.

A Way to restore unity among Christian Churches:

 A continuous renewal of the Church in greater fidelity to
her vocation;
 A conversion of heart
 Prayer in common
 Fraternal knowledge
 Ecumenical formation and dialogue
 Collaboration among Christians.

Ask the students: As a Catholic, are you in communion in the

Church you belong? In what way?

2. CHRIST CALLS THE CHURCH TO BE HOLY (The

Church as Holy)
To arouse the students’ interest, as their notion of a holy person.
Have them give examples of “holy person” and give their reasons
why they consider this person “holy”. Then invite them to think
about their life. Ask them their personal values:
1. How do they spend their time?
2. How do they spend their money?
3. What is closest to their hearts?
There will bevaried answers.
Sacred Scripture
John 15:5-10 > “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in
My love?

Help the students understand the passage by emphasizing the

following points:
1. Requirements to live holy life:
 We have to change our sinful selves, be closely linked
with Jesus and have intimate loving relationship with
Him, for He is the vine of God to whom, as branches,
we are attached. God is the source of life, as well as the
fruitfulness for us, “Living with Jesus” means following
His ways and obeying what He has taught. However, we
cannot do this on our own; we need the help of the Holy
Spirit, who renews us day by day with strength. Without
the help of God, we can do nothing; but we also to do
our part. We need to be open, humble, and to cooperate
with the workings of the Spirit within us. When we do
this we are able to lead holy lives as we are called to do
by Christ.

2. Consequence of being far from God:

 We fall into temptation, dull our minds and hearts and
weaken our spiritual life. Then we become useless
branches, on the way to be burnt or join a garbage heap.

3. Two things a good follower of Christ should remember:

 1. A good follower of Christ enriches his own life; his
contact with Jesus makes him fruitful branch.
 2. He brings glory to God by his good example, which
inspires others to be faithful to God, too.

4. What it means to live in Jesus’ love or to live a holy life.

 It means to live according to Jesus’ great commandment
of love;
 to love God above all things with all one’s heart and to
love one another as He did in obedience to the will of
the Father.
 In other words, it is becoming more God-like, living in
His presence and love; doing normal things for and with
God.
 And being in love with God and expressing that love of
God through love for all creation and all people.
 It is living life the way God intends us to do.
5. The Church is Holy
 has two aspects
1. Sanctity in the Church
 The word Holy means sacred and is where we
get the word saint, one who is in heaven.
Holy refers to something or someone that is set
aside for God.
2. Sinners in the Church
Church on earth is made up of sinners. We possess
a real but imperfect holiness. The Churches
holiness seeks to transform sinners enabling them to
become saints.

 The Church is Holy because, although Church members

sin, the Church as the Body of Christ is sinless.

 Each of us as a member of the Church has been called to

holiness.
 By God’s grace we strive for holiness, through the power of
the Holy Spirit.
 Our Church has been marked by outstanding examples of
holiness in the lives of the saints of every age.
 No matter how dark the times may have been for our
Church, there have always been those great saints through
whom the light of Christ has radiated.
 Even though members of the Church fail and sin, the
Church continues to be the sign and instrument of holiness.

Question:
Though people were sinners, as a grade 10 students, how will you
become an instrument of holiness, in your family, in your school and
the people around you?

3. CHRIST CALLS THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TO BE

UNIVERSAL
(The Church as Catholic)

Sacred Scripture
Acts 1:8 > “You will be my witness… to the ends of the earth

When we say the Church is Catholic, we are saying two

things:
• The Church possesses
the fullness of Christ
and has received from
him the fullness of the
means of salvation.
• The Church has been sent on a mission by Christ to all
people in the world to gather all into the People of God.
• The word catholic means “universal.”
• At the very beginning, it was difficult to see how the “little
flock” (Luke 12:32) in the land of Israel could, by any
stretch of the imagination, qualify as universal.
• But, through the power of the Holy Spirit, it spread to the
ends of the earth.
• Many accepted the faith then and there and began carrying
“the Catholic Church” back to the four corners of the earth.
• “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew
28:19).
• The Church is Catholic because it exists for all people and is
the means of salvation for all people.

4. CHRIST ENTRUSTS HIS MISSION TO THE

APOSTOLIC CHURCH
(The Church is Apostolic)

Sacred Scripture
Ephesians 2:19-20 > You are… built upon the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the capstone”.

• The Church is Apostolic because she is founded on the

Apostles.
• “Jesus answered them, ‘Did I not choose you twelve?’”
(John 6:70).
• Jesus sent his Apostles to continue his Father’s mission, and
he gave them authority and power.
How do we know that the Apostles have the power and
authority to pass on to others what they had received
from Christ?
“Whoever listens to you listens to me” (Luke 10:16
 The Church is also Apostolic in that the Deposit of Faith
found in both Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition was
preserved, taught, and handed on by the Apostles.
 Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth,
 the Magisterium (the teaching authority entrusted to the
Apostles and their successors) has the duty to preserve,
teach, defend, and hand on this Deposit of Faith.
 The Pope and bishops in union with him form the
Magisterium, the living, teaching office of the Church.
 The Holy Spirit protects the Church from error in its
teaching authority.
 The Church is Apostolic because she is founded on Jesus’
Apostles in three ways:
 She was and is “built upon the foundation of the
apostles” (Ephesians 2:20), who lived with and were
taught by Jesus.
 With the help of the Holy Spirit, the Church preserves
and hands on the teaching of the Apostles and their
successors.
 The Church continues to be taught, made holy, and led
by the Magisterium.
Fullness of Grace
Jesus Christ intended that the fullness of his grace should
come to his People in a Church that, from the beginning,
was what the Creed still calls it today: “one, holy, catholic,
and apostolic.”

Remember:
Our duty, then, as baptized Catholics, is to make these
four marks of the Church visible in our daily lives.

 The Church is the people called forth by the Triune God

to be united under Christ as one toward the fullness of
salvation and holiness involving mission. Unity is not
uniformity, to be united demands a radical change of
heart (conversion), creativity, and sacrifice. It is the love
of God and neighbor that marks the life of holiness,
which is a universal call for all the baptized. Therefore,
the catholicity of the Church means not discriminating
against anyone. Rather, it is all embracing, for the
Church sends its message and service of love and
worship of the living God by active participation in the
Church’s program of activities- a continuation of
Christ’s mission.

Values CHRIST – CENTEREDNESS

Integration
The Four Marks of the Church—One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic
—are deeply rooted in Christ, who is the foundation and head of the
Church. In understanding the Church as Catholic and Apostolic,
students are called to recognize Christ’s universal mission of
salvation and the Church’s apostolic foundation entrusted to His
disciples.

To apply Christ-centeredness in this lesson, students will reflect on

how Jesus’ teachings and mission continue through the Church
today. They will be encouraged to embrace a personal commitment
to Christ by actively participating in the life of the Church, sharing
the Gospel with others, and living out their faith with love and
service.
