IT 329 – Final Activity 1

1. What is Artificial Intelligence?

- Artificial intelligence (AI) involves simulating human intelligence through systems or

machines, aiming to create devices that can mimic human behaviors such as

perception, reasoning, learning, planning, and prediction. The ultimate goal is to

develop machines that can think and act similarly to humans, encompassing a wide

range of cognitive tasks like problem-solving and decision-making. AI technologies,

including machine learning and deep learning, are used to achieve these capabilities

by analyzing vast amounts of data and improving performance over time.

2. What is Artificial Intelligence ethics?

- AI ethics is a set of guiding principles designed to maximize the benefits of artificial

intelligence while minimizing its negative impacts. These principles help establish

what is right and wrong in AI development, focusing on transparency, inclusivity,

sustainability, and accountability. By incorporating AI ethics, organizations can create

systems that "think twice" about their decisions by ensuring transparency in decision-

making, mitigating bias in algorithms, prioritizing data privacy, and promoting

accountability for AI actions. This framework encourages AI producers to respect

data privacy laws, explain data usage to customers, and address ethical questions

surrounding AI technologies.

3. What are the ethical issues of artificial intelligence?

Here are five key ethical issues related to AI, as identified in a Delphi study:

 Lack of Trust: Difficulty in trusting AI systems due to their complexity and potential for

errors, as highlighted in the Delphi study.

 Bias and Discrimination: AI systems can perpetuate biases and discrimination if not

properly designed, a concern emphasized in the study.

 Lack of Privacy: Misuse of personal data and potential breaches of privacy, a significant

issue noted in the Delphi study.

 Loss of Jobs: AI can lead to job displacement as automation replaces human workers,

a concern raised in the study.

 Lack of Accountability and Liability: Difficulty in assigning responsibility when AI

systems cause harm or errors, an issue underscored by the Delphi study's findings.

4. Why ethics important in artificial intelligence?

- Ethics is crucial in artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure it benefits humanity and avoids

potential dangers. As AI advances, it's essential to guide its development with ethical

principles to prevent it from going "rogue" or causing harm. Ethical guidelines

promote transparency, accountability, and fairness in AI systems, helping to minimize

biases, protect privacy, and prevent misuse of data. By implementing ethics into AI

development, we can steer AI to help humankind, ensuring it remains a tool that

enhances society rather than threatens it. Industry self-regulation and ongoing

monitoring of AI-based judgments are key to achieving this goal.

5. What is the role of artificial intelligence in surveillance and privacy?

- Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a dual role in surveillance and privacy, acting both as

a powerful tool for enhanced surveillance and a significant threat to privacy rights.

On one hand, AI technologies like facial recognition and predictive analytics enable

more detailed and efficient surveillance, which can be used for security purposes

such as crime detection and prevention. However, this increased surveillance

capability raises concerns about privacy invasions, as AI can track individuals without

their consent and analyze vast amounts of personal data, potentially leading to
unauthorized surveillance, identity theft, and loss of anonymity. The use of AI in

surveillance often lacks transparency and oversight, exacerbating privacy risks and

highlighting the need for robust regulations to balance security benefits with

individual privacy rights.
