Mike is a 47-year-old man who has been living in Supported Living accommodation for 13 years. He
was happy and settled living with his friends Jon. Unfortunately, after developing covid Jon died. The
men had formed a strong friendship and had enjoyed doing lots of activities together. They
particularly liked gardening and had a greenhouse at the back of the home, growing tomatoes.
Since Jon died Mike has lost interest. The home policy is to fill the vacancy as soon as possible so
after a two-month period Thomas was moved into the home. Thomas is 25 years old. Thomas and
Mike share some interests as they enjoy listening to music. Mike is keen fans of the local football
team and would go with Jon to as many games as they could. Thomas has recently started to
support the team and wants to go to the games with Mike. Mike has been attending an activity
centre three days a week for many years and is very popular there. Thomas has recently started
attending the same centre on the same days.
Both Mike and Thomas are described as having a moderate learning disability. Mike and Thomas
both are supported at home by a 24hour staff team. Mike has generalized epilepsy, which was well
managed with medication but recently he has been having increased seizures. Thomas does not
have any other additional health conditions and is generally fit and well. Mike and Thomas are up to
date with their annual health checks.
Staff have reported that Mike has recently been very quiet and withdrawn, preferring to stay in his
room. He seems to have lost his appetite and, on some occasions, appears upset towards Thomas
and the staff. Mike has been refusing to go out and attend his session at the day centre, he is also
not getting out of bed in the morning. This is a concern as regular attendance is required to ensure
that Mike keeps his place at the centre. Staff at the home are worried regarding Mike’s epilepsy, low
mood and changed behaviour. The staff at the centre are missing Mike, but report that Thomas has
settled well and has made friends easily.
