Introduction to Crime and Deviance 2

Deviance is when people do things differently from what society considers normal. Many

people think it's because they haven't learned good social behavior and therefore don't follow the

rules like they should. This essay will examine what deviance means, why following social

norms is important, and why some people behave in unusual ways.

Deviance means doing something, thinking something, or being different in a way that is

not socially acceptable. These norms are the rules, values, and standards that members of a

society or group follow. Breaking the rules can be minor, like not following traffic rules, or more

serious, like stealing or hurting someone. Ideas about being different or breaking the rules will

change and vary across cultures and situations. What some people consider bad in one place or

time may be acceptable in another, showing that what is regarded as bad behavior is influenced

by society.

Conforming to social norms and expectations means acting, thinking, and feeling like

most people do. It shows that people follow the rules and expectations of a society or group.

Conformity helps people come together and get along by following the same rules. This makes it

easier for people to work together and understand each other better. Social norms are the rules

that people follow in society. They are applied through teaching, the approval or disapproval of

others, and the law. It is important to respect the rules of society so that everything goes well and

everyone gets along.

Introduction to Crime and Deviance 3

Many ideas have been proposed to understand why people act up. These ideas come from

many perspectives, such as biology, psychology, and society. Biological explanations indicate

that genes, brain function, and chemical imbalances can cause people to act unusually.

Psychological theories study human personality, experiences, and thinking. They also study

mental issues, challenging experiences, and how people learn from others. The sociological

perspective examines how society and culture can influence people to behave in specific ways.

They study theories such as strain theory, social disorganization, and labeling theory to

understand why people violate society's rules.

In short, deviance means doing things that do not conform to what society considers

normal. Following society's rules helps things run smoothly, but some people still break the rules

for different reasons, such as biology, how they think, and how they were raised. By exploring

why people follow or break rules, we can understand how societies maintain order and how

people try to change it. Ultimately, studying deviant behavior helps us understand how people

balance fitting in and standing out. It shows how personal choices and social norms influence

how people act.
