Wassail Mittens
By Brenda K.B. Anderson
These festive mittens are much easier than they look! The stitch pattern is a simple variation of the double crochet stitch
which creates a flexible, smooth fabric without large holes between stitches. The simple snowflake and pine tree motifs are
added after the mittens are constructed by using scraps of wool yarn and a felting pen- it’s just like drawing with yarn!
Sizes
Little Kid [approx. age 6-8] (Big Kid [approx. age 9-11], Women’s S/M, Women’s M/L)
Finished Measurements
7 (7.5, 8, 8)” [18 (19, 20.5, 20.5) cm] circumference around hand, excluding thumb

acrylic or acrylic-wool blend yarn may be used
• 2 yards [2 m] of DK or felt-able worsted weight wool or alpaca yarn (CYCA #3 or #4) for
decorative snowflake/tree motif
• US F [3.75 mm] crochet hook for ribbing, US H [5.0 mm] crochet hook for everything

Gauge
Work directions for Ribbing, piece measures 1.75 (2, 2.25, 2.25)” [4.5 (5, 6, 6) cm] by 6 (6.75,
7.25, 7.25)” [15.5 (17, 18.5, 18.5) cm]
15 sts and 12 rows = 4” [10 cm] over Knotted Double Crochet (KDC) in turned rows, blocked
Pattern Notes
Cuff is made sideways in turned rows, stitches for hand are picked up across the top edge of
cuff and mittens are worked back and forth in turned rows from wrist to fingertip, then
seamed along the side edge after using a felting pen and scrap yarn to decorate with a
snowflake or tree motif. Increases create thumb gusset and stitches are skipped to create
thumbhole. Thumb is worked later, in joined, turned rounds.
Special Stitches
Knotted Double Crochet (KDC)
Worked as follows: yo, insert hook into next st and pull up loop, pull same loop through first
loop on hook, yo, pull loop through both loops on hook.
Instructions
Ribbed Cuff
With smaller hook, ch 10 (11, 12, 12).
Row 1: Beginning with second ch from hook and working into the bottom of the ch, HDC in
each ch across, turn. 9 (10, 11, 11) sts.
Rows 2-19 (2-21, 2-23, 2-23): Ch 2, HDC blp across, turn.
Rows 20 (22, 24, 24): Ch 2, HDC blp across, do not turn. Do not fasten off.
Hand
Row 1 (RS): Keeping same side facing, rotate cuff 90-degrees to work across row-ends. Ch 1,
(beginning ch does not count as a stitch now and throughout), SC across top edge of Ribbing
making 1 SC into each row-end, ending with 2 SC in last Row-end (in other words, make 1 SC
into each ridge and 1 SC into each valley across, working one extra SC at end), turn. Use
stitch marker to mark this side as RS. 21 (23, 25, 25) SC.
Row 2: Ch 1 (turning ch does not count as a st now and throughout), KDC in next 9 (10, 11, 11)
sts, 2 KDC in next st, KDC in next st, PM in st just made, 2 KDC in next st, KDC in each of next
9 (10, 11, 11) sts, turn. 2 sts inc; 23 (25, 27, 27) sts.
Rows 3-6 (3-7, 3-8, 3-8): Ch 1, turn, KDC across until 1 st remains before st marker, 2 KDC in
next st, KDC in next st, 2 KDC in next st, KDC to end, turn. 2 sts inc each row, 31 (35, 39, 39) sts
after working Row 6 (7, 8, 8).
Row 7 (8, 9, 9): Ch 1, KDC across, turn.
Row 8 (9, 10, 10) (thumbhole row): Ch 1, KDC in next 12 (14, 15, 15) sts, ch 1, skip next 7 (7, 9, 9)
sts, KDC in each of next 12 (14, 15, 15) sts, turn. 25 (29, 31, 31) sts excluding sts set aside for
thumb. PM in first skipped st and leave in place until thumb is worked.
Row 17 (19, 20, 21): Ch 1, KDC2tog, KDC in each of next 6 (8, 9, 9) sts, KDC2tog, KDC in next st,
KDC2tog, KDC in each of next 6 (8, 9, 9) sts, KDC2tog, turn. 4 sts dec; 17 (21, 23, 23) sts.
Thumb
Rnd 1: With WS (RS, WS, WS) facing, pull up loop in marked st at thumb, ch 1 (does not count
as a stitch), KDC in each of next 7 (7, 9, 9) sts, KDC2tog into the space where thumb meets
hand, KDC in bottom of the ch-1 from thumbhole rnd, KDC2tog into the space where thumb
meets hand, sl st to first KDC of rnd to join, turn. Use marker to keep track of first st of rnd. 10
(10, 12, 12) sts.
Rnds 2-3 (2-4, 2-5, 2-5): Ch 1 (does not count as a st), KDC in each st around, sl st to first KDC
of rnd to join, turn.
Rnd 4 (5, 6, 6): Ch 1, KDC2tog 5 (5, 6, 6) times. 5 (5, 6, 6) sts remain.
Fasten off. Turn thumb RS out if needed. Using yarn needle, weave yarn tail through front
loops of each st and pull tight to close top of thumb.
Finishing
Weave in all ends except for long sewing tail, block if needed. Using needle felting pen, attach
pieces of yarn to mitten in the shape of a snowflake or tree. Begin by determining the length
of longest piece first. Each piece of yarn should measure about 0.25” [0.75 cm] longer than
finished measurement including a knot on each end of yarn strand. Reference video for
felting procedure. Use long yarn tail to seam side edge of mitten. Weave in ends, block again
if needed.
