1 Overview of Functions
NEXIV VirtualMeasure is an off-line software program to create a teaching file without using hardware.

A teaching file can be created by using the CAD data of work pieces in the same procedure as NEXIV AutoMeasure.
The created teaching file can be edited and executed by reading it by the NEXIV AutoMeasure.

The NEXIV VirtualMeasure can be run while the NEXIV AutoMeasure is running. 1

Overview of Functions
Restrictions
• The NEXIV VirtualMeasure cannot perform the modes such as Run measurement starts mode, Confirm results
mode and Calibration mode, and hardware settings ([Settings] on the menu bar).
• The user cannot log in to this software with the Operator privilege.

2 Preparation
To run the NEXIV VirtualMeasure in a computer environment where the NEXIV VirtualMeasure is not connected to the
hardware unit, the NEXIV.cfg file that contains the hardware’s calibration information is required.
Copy the NEXIV.cfg file from the hardware’s host computer, and then run the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

Copy source: C:\NEXIV3\INIT\NEXIV.cfg in the host computer

The NEXIV.cfg file need not be copied when the NEXIV VirtualMeasure is connected to the hardware unit in a computer
environment. 2

Preparation
2.1 Starting and Terminating NEXIV VirtualMeasure

(1) Starting NEXIV VirtualMeasure

1. Start the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

Start the NEXIV VirtualMeasure from the Start menu or by clicking the icon on the desktop.

A login screen is displayed.

2. Log in to the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

Enter a user name and password for login.

When the NEXIV VirtualMeasure is installed, the following types of user categories are set by default: Manager
(NEXIV3-MGR), Engineer (NEXIV3-ENG), and Maintenance (Nikon). Enter the user name and password to log in
and click the [OK] button.
The login operation will be skipped if the [The software is started automatically by current login user after next
time] checkbox is selected in the User Registration dialog box.

Display Items Description

Version Version information of the application is displayed.

User name Enter a login user name in this text box.

Enter a password in this text box.


Password
This item can be omitted when password setting is not required.

Click this button to log in to the NEXIV VirtualMeasure with the entered user name and password.
[OK] button
This button is disabled when no user name has been entered.

[Cancel] button Click this button to close the window and terminate the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

3. Display the main window.

Upon successful completion of the login, the NEXIV VirtualMeasure main window opens.

(2) Terminating NEXIV VirtualMeasure

1. Terminate the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

Perform one of the following methods to terminate the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

• Click [File] - [Exit application] from the menu bar (recommended).

• Click the [Close] button ( ) in the upper right corner of the main window.

• Click the icon at the right end of the title bar in the main window to display the system menu. Select [Close] in
the menu.

• Press the [Alt] + [F4] keys on the keyboard.

2.2 NEXIV VirtualMeasure-Specific Functions

The windows (functions) of the NEXIV VirtualMeasure are essentially the same as those of the NEXIV AutoMeasure
except for the NEXIV VirtualMeasure-specific functions in the following two windows.
This section describes the functions that are displayed only by the NEXIV VirtualMeasure.

For other functions on the relevant windows, see “NEXIV AutoMeasure (Reference).”

From the menu bar, select [CAD Graphics] - [Automatic measurement from CAD features] to open this window.

3 Basic Operations

3.1 Creating Teaching Data

Create teaching data based on the CAD data of work pieces.

3.1.1 Loading CAD Data

Read the CAD data of work pieces from the file to create teaching data.

Select the Start teaching mode on Function selection pane.

Click [CAD Graphics] - [Open CAD file] on the menu bar to open dialog box below.

Basic Operations
Select file and click the [Open] button.

The following six CAD file types are readable:

 IGES File (*.IGS)

 DXF File (*.dxf)

 GERBER File (*.GBR)

 NC File (*.NC)

 CSV File (*.csv)

3.1.2 Displaying CAD Data

After the CAD data has been read, CAD drawings are displayed on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel.

Basic Operations

The range in the red rectangular frame shown on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel is displayed as CAD drawings on the
video panel.
CAD drawings are shown on the video panel at the magnification of the real machine. Changing the zoom magnification
enlarges or reduces CAD drawings in the video panel.

Precautions
If the display magnification on the video panel is not appropriate, the calibration information may not have been set
correctly.
Check whether the NEXIV.cfg file is correctly set.

Use the tool bar on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel for operations such as enlarging/reducing CAD data.
For details of tool bar, see 1.6, “Graphics Panel” in the “NEXIV AutoMeasure Instruction Manual (Reference)”.

To display a position of the CAD data on the video panel, double-click the position you want to display on Graphics
(CAD mode) panel or select [Stage position setting area] on the DRO panel to move the stage. After the stage moves, a
red rectangular frame appears at the destination position.

3.1.3 Setting the Local Coordinate System

Set the local coordinate system as needed for CAD data.

For setting the local coordinate system, see 2.4, “Setting Coordinates” in the “NEXIV AutoMeasure Instruction Manual
(Tutorial)”.

3.1.4 Creating Measurement Tool

Create a measurement tool based on the CAD data of work pieces.

(1) Manually Creating a Measurement Tool

Manually create a measurement tool.

Values of each feature can be referenced to be used for measured values and design values by selecting a feature to
be measured and manually measuring it. Note that correct result is not obtained if a different feature is selected.

Perform manual measurement on the video panel in the same way as probe measurement by using the real machine. 3
This also applies to recall measurement.

Only point, circle, line, and arc features can be used for measurement tools.

Basic Operations
Operation procedure

1. Display the feature to be measured

Select the [Stage move] checkbox on the video panel, and then double-click on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel
to display the feature to be measured on the video panel.

2. Select the feature to be measured

Select a CAD feature on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel.

Confirm that no other feature is selected.

3. Select the measurement tool

Select a measurement tool suited for the feature to be measured.

The target feature turns orange on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel. If the feature color remains unchanged, there
is a discrepancy between the feature and the measurement tool.

4. Select the probe to be used for measurement

5. Set the measurement conditions

Set the zoom magnification, illumination, and probe size to meet actual measurement conditions.

6. Create the measurement tool

Measure input points necessary for the measurement on the video panel using a probe, and then create a
measurement tool.

The created measurement tool is added to the list panel.


For measured values and design values, refer to the values of each feature.

(2) Automatically Creating Measurement Tools

Automatically create measurement tools collectively for features to be measured.

Only point, circle, line, and arc features can be used for measurement tools. Even if these features are present in
mixture, measurement tools can be collectively created because measurement tools are automatically determined
depending on features.

The following operation procedure is used when [Same measurement as feature] is selected as creating method of
feature.
For other procedures, see Chapter 4, “Advanced Operations.”

1. Select the feature to be measured

Select CAD features on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel.

2. Display the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane

Selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Automatic measurement from CAD features] on the menu bar displays the [Create
Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane.

For the functional description of [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane, see 2.4.15,
“Automatic Measurement from CAD Features” in the “NEXIV AutoMeasure Instruction Manual (Reference)”.

3. Select the probe to be used for measurement

4. Set the measurement conditions

Set the zoom magnification, illumination, and probe size to meet actual measurement conditions.
Use the measurement conditions verified in the actual machine.

5. Check the [Without enter point] checkbox on the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD
Features] pane

For details of the [Without enter point] checkbox, see 2.2, “(1) Automatic Measurement from CAD Features”.

To execute AF at the beginning of the measurement, clear the [Without enter point] checkbox, enter one point with
the AF probe, and then enter one point with the probe used for measurement.

6. Set conditions for [Condition of point measure creation], [Inside offset from CAD line], and [AF offset
amount]

To set conditions, click the [Detail setting] button on the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features]
pane and then set conditions on the [Automatic Creation of Measurement] pane.

Measurement” in the “NEXIV AutoMeasure Instruction Manual (Reference).”

7. Create the measurement tool

Click the [OK] button on the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane creates
measurement tools for all selected features with the set conditions.

Measurement tools are added to the list panel in the order of feature numbers.

Measurement tools are created for line, circle, and arc features as shown below.

1) Line feature (Line tool)

The orientation of the probe is the left side of the travel direction from line’s starting point to ending point.
The travel direction of features can be checked by selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Show CAD feature direction] from
the menu bar.

Save created measurement tools in the teaching file.

Select [File] - [Save as] from the menu bar to save measurement tools in a desired folder.

Execute (replay) or edit the teaching data created by the NEXIV VirtualMeasure by using the NEXIV AutoMeasure.

3.2.1 Loading Teaching Data

The teaching data loading procedure varies depending on whether the local coordinate system has been set.

When the local coordinate system has been set

 Select [File] - [Open] from the menu bar to load the teaching file created by the NEXIV VirtualMeasure

position as CAD data

When the local coordinate system has not been set

When the local coordinate system has not been set, perform the following procedure to load the teaching data:

 Select [Coordinate] - [Initial coordinate setting] from the menu bar to set the initial coordinate system at the same
position as CAD data

 Set the local coordinate system

 Select [File] - [Append teaching file] from the menu bar to load the teaching file created by the NEXIV
VirtualMeasure

3.2.2 Editing Teaching Data

Select [Edit] from the menu bar to change illumination, zoom magnification, etc. as needed.

Save the edited teaching data as needed in the teaching file.

Precautions
Note that executing [Retry measurement] changes design values from feature values to re-measured values.

3.2.3 Executing Replay

Select [Replay] - [Run] from the menu bar to run the replay measurement for the teaching data.

Create a measurement tool for line, circle, or arc feature by using point measurement.

Perform the following operation procedure.

3. Select [Center point from feature] from each [Creating method of feature] drop-down list

5. Create the measurement tool


The measurement tool is added to the list panel.

Performing point measurement for the selected feature

Clicking the [OK] button on the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane starts point
measurement for the selected feature.
A measurement tool is created as follows.
(a) For circle feature, perform point measurement at the circle center.
(b) For line feature, perform point measurement at the mid position between starting point and ending point of the
line feature.
(c) For arc feature, perform point measurement at the arc center.

Performing point measurement on the circumference of a circle or arc

To perform point measurement on the circumference of a circle or arc, click the [Detail setting] button to display the
[Automatic Creation of Measurement] pane.
Select the [Create points on arc feature] checkbox of [Condition of arc feature creation].
A measurement tool is created as follows.
(a) For circle feature, perform point measurement at the point on the circumference in the specified axial direction.
(b) For arc feature, perform point measurement at the center on the arc.

Obtaining the distance between line feature and point measurement as a result

To obtain the distance between line feature and point measurement as a result, select the [Construct from distance
between point measure and line feature] checkbox of [Condition of line feature creation].
A measurement tool is created as follows.
(a) Perform point measurement at the mid position between starting point and ending point of the line feature.
(b) Create a line feature that is the same as the feature to be measured.
(c) Create the Point to Line tool.

i. For line feature, perform point measurement at the mid position between starting point and ending point of the

point measurement as a result.

Disassemble a line, circle, or arc feature into point tools as many as the number set by [No. of point entered], and recall
the created point tools by the original line tool, circle tool, or arc tool to create them.

Perform the following operation procedure.

Select CAD features on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel.

2. Display the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane

Selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Automatic measurement from CAD features] on the menu bar displays the [Create

5. Disassemble the CAD feature to the point tool

When the [OK] button in the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane is clicked, the
selected feature is disassembled into point tools as many as the number set by [No. of point entered], and the
created point tools are recalled and created by the original line tool, circle tool, or arc tool.

A measurement tool is created as follows.

(a) A circle feature is disassembled into point tools as many as the number set by [No. of point entered], and the
created point tools are recalled and created by the original circle tool.

(b) A line feature is disassembled into point tools as many as the number set by [No. of point entered], and the
created point tools are recalled and created by the original line tool.

(c) An arc feature is disassembled into point tools as many as the number set by [No. of point entered], and the
created point tools are recalled and created by the original arc tool.

4.3 Creating a Measurement Tool from the CAD Feature with Macro Code

Copy the measurement tool in the macro code for all features selected on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel to
automatically create a measurement tool.

When the local coordinate system has not been set, an origin setting tool is automatically created at the origin point of
the CAD initial coordinate.

Perform the following operation procedure.

This procedure is provided on the assumption that the macro code has been created.
For details of creating macro code, see 3.18, “Macro” in the “NEXIV AutoMeasure Instruction Manual (Reference).”

2. Display the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane


Selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Automatic measurement from CAD features] on the menu bar displays the [Create
Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane.

3. Check the [Without enter point] checkbox

4. Check the [Use macro code] checkbox and then use the [Browse] button to select a macro code

5. Create the measurement tool


Clicking the [OK] button on the [Create Measurements Automatically from CAD Features] pane creates a
measurement tool with the selected macro code.
The measurement tool is added to the list panel.

Add all features selected on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel to the list panel as teaching data.

Teaching data is created in ascending order of feature number as a key input tool.

Operation procedure

1. Select the feature to be measured

Select CAD features on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel.

2. Add the teaching data to list panel

Copy the measurement tool in the macro code for all features selected on the Graphics (CAD mode) panel to
automatically create a measurement tool.

Select the [Apply macro to a series of CAD features] checkbox to sequentially associate each measurement tool in the
macro code with the selected CAD feature to create a measurement tool.
When the local coordinate system has not been set, an origin setting tool is automatically created at the origin point of
the CAD initial coordinate.

Creating a measurement tool is on the assumption that the macro code has been created.

Selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Assign different macro to each T-Code] on the menu bar displays the [Assign
different macro to each T-Code] pane.
All set D-code/T-code numbers are displayed in the D-code/T-code number - macro code correspondence table.

2. Set the folder that contains the macro code to be referenced in [Macro code folder]

3. Set the macro code setting for the D-code/T-code number

Advanced Operations
Setting the macro code setting for the D-code/T-code number.
Click the [D-code/T-code number] on the D-code/T-code number - macro code correspondence table then click
the [Modify] button.
The [Edit Assign Different Macro to each T-Code] pane appears. Select the target macro code from the macro
code list, and then click the [OK] button.
Set the macro code for all D-code/T-code numbers to be created collectively.

D-code/T-code number
The initial value of D-code/T-code numbers is set to 0 for all CAD data.
If D-code/T-code numbers are not applicable to collective creation, delete them from the [D-code/T-code
number - macro code correspondence table] pane by clicking the [Delete] button.

4. Create the measurement tool

Create a measurement tool to perform Scan Laser measurement on the surface of the selected CAD data area.

Scan Laser measurement is performed for CAD data that meet the following conditions.

(1) Selecting a Part of CAD Data

When the CAD data is selected, only the selected feature is used.

(2) Selecting Whole CAD Data

When the CAD data is entirely selected, it must be configured only with the outer circumference profile line and the
inner hole profile line.

Operation procedure

1. Display the [Measure Surface Area with Laser Scanning] pane

Selecting [CAD Graphics] - [Measure surface area with laser scanning] on the menu bar displays the [Measure
surface area with laser scanning] pane.
Select a feature as needed.
