 Hockey India has announced Harendra Singh as the chief coach of the Indian’s
men’s team, while Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne returns to the women’s camp.

PERSONALITIES AWARDS, EVENTS


CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award
 A three-man BCCI panel has recommended former India women's team captain
and current CoA member, Diana Edulji, for the prestigious CK Nayudu Lifetime
Achievement Award.

 Edulji had played 20 Tests and 34 ODIs in a career spanning over 17 years,
taking 63 and 46 wickets respectively.
 She played at a time when the game was run by Women's Cricket Association of
India (WCAI)
 Presently, Edulji is a part of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of
Administrators (CoA) running Indian cricket.

Sarvashrestha Suraksha Puraskar


 Leading Indian agrochemical company, Parijat Industries (India) Pvt Ltd, has
been conferred with the top level National Safety Awards, "Sarvashrestha
Suraksha Puraskar" gold award for the year 2017.
 The award was conferred for consistent and meritorious operational safety,
performance and implementing occupational safety and health (OSH)
management system procedures at its manufacturing plant at Ambala.

PC Chandra Puraskaar
 Legendary singer Asha Bhosle was honoured with the 26th PC Chandra
Puraskaar.
 She received the award for her contribution in the field of Indian music.
 Asha Bhosle’s career spans over 70 years.

SPORTS
WBC Asia Boxer of the Year – Neeraj Goyat
 Indian pugilist Neeraj Goyat has been conferred with the WBC Asia Boxer of the
Year Award.

 Neeraj is the current WBC Asia champion in the welter weight category.
 Since turning pro in 2011, Neeraj has won nine fights including two knockouts.

ISSF World rankings


 India’s 10m air pistol shooter Shahzar Rizvi grabbed the No. 1 spot in ISSF
(International Shooting Sport Federation) World rankings.
 Rizvi won Silver medal in the World Cup held at Changwon, Korea.

 10m air rifle rankings: Ravi Kumar 4th, Deepak Kumar 9th

Writers' Footballer of the Year


 Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named the Football Writers'
Association Footballer of the Year for 2017-18 after scoring 43 goals so far in an
incredible debut season for Liverpool.
 Mohamed Salah, an Egypt star is the first African winner of this award and he
also won the Football Writers' Association (FWA) player of the year award in April.
 Football Writers' Association (FWA) presenting this award since 1948 to the
world’s best soccer’s.
 Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne came second with Tottenham striker
Harry Kane third.
 Chelsea women football club and England forward Fran Kirby won the inaugural
FWA Women's Footballer of the Year award.

Belgrade International Boxing


 Sumit Sangwan (91 kg) and Nikhat Zareen (51 kg) won gold-medals at the 56th
Belgrade International Boxing Tournament held in Serbia.
 The third gold was bagged by boxer Himanshu Sharma. India ended the
tournament with13 medals in total including three gold, five silver and five
bronzes.
 The silver medals are won by women Boxers Jamuna Boro in 54 kg category
and Ralte Lalfakmawii 81 kg category.
 In the men's draw, silver medals are won by Laldinmawia in 52 kg category,
Varinder Singh in 56 kg in category and Pawan Kumar in 69 kg category.
 Narender (91 kg) had fetched a bronze in the men’s competition.
 In the women’s competition, Rajesh Narwal in 48 kg category, Priyanka Thakur
in 60 kg category, Rumi Gogoi in 75 kg category and Nirmala Rawat in 81 kg
category had settled for bronze medals.

Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship


 India weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga has won silver in Youth section and bronze
medal in Junior section at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting
Championship at Urgench, Uzbekistan.

 The 15-year-old Lalrinnunga created two new national record in Youth boys and
junior men category by lifting weight of 250 kg in total.
 Sidhant Gogoi, 14, finished with bronze medal with a lift of 243 kg in Youth Boys
section.
 Two Indian women athletes from Orissa, Jhilli Dalabehera clinched the silver
medal in junior women after lifting 166 kg, while Sneha Soren lifted 145 kg to
bag the bronze medal in Youth Girls.

Asian Weightlifting Championship 2019


 India’s is set to host the prestigious Asian Weightlifting Championship 2019 for
the first time in the history of its weightlifting journey.
 This Asian Weightlifting Championship 2019 will serve as the qualifying event for
the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
 The decision regarding hosting Asian Weightlifting Championship 2019 in India
was taken at the Executive Board Meeting and Congress of the Asian
Weightlifting Federation held at Urgench, Uzbekistan.
 The last edition of the Asian Championship was held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

Tournoi World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship


 India's CA Bhavani Devi won a silver medal in the sabre event of the Tournoi
World Cup Satellite Fencing Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland.
 The Tamil Nadu fencer went down to USA's Alexis Browne in the final.

 Bhavani Devi had won a gold medal at the Reykjavik tournament in 2017 to
become the first Indian to do so in an international fencing event.

Badminton Asia Championships 2018


 Indian badminton player Saina Nehwal won bronze medal at the Asia
Championships 2018 held at Wuhan Sports Center, Wuhan, China.
 Saina Nehwal won bronze medal after losing the semi-finals with Chinese
badminton player Tai Tzu Ying.

 Indian badminton player HS Prannoy won bronze medal at the Asia


Championships 2018 after losing the semi-finals with Chinese badminton player
 This is only the second time after 2014 that India has won two medals in a single
edition of the continental championships.
 This was Saina's third medal at the tournament, while Prannoy became the third
Indian to medal in the men's singles event at the Championships.
 Saina had previously won bronze in 2010 and 2016 while Sindhu had also won
a bronze in 2014.

 Khanna remains the only Indian to win gold at the continental championships

World Asthma Day – May 01


 World Asthma Day 2018 is being celebrated on May 1.
 The theme for this year is "Never too early, never too late. It's always the right
time to address airways disease".
 The day is observed around the world every year and is organised by Global
Initiative for Asthma (GINA), in collaboration with the World Health Organisation
(WHO).
 This year marks the 20th anniversary of World Asthma Day.

World Press Freedom Day – May 03


 World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in
December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General
Conference.
 Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated
worldwide as World Press Freedom Day.
 2018 Theme: Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and The Rule of Law
 The theme of the 2018 celebration highlights the importance of an enabling legal
environment for press freedom and gives special attention to the role of an
independent judiciary in ensuring legal guarantees for press freedom and the
prosecution of crimes against journalists.
 Within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the contribution of
journalists and media workers is most associated with Sustainable Development
Goal (SDG) 16 of peace, justice and strong institutions.
