Impact of generative AI
• Generative AI can drive a 7% (or almost $7 trillion) increase in global GDP and lift productivity growth
by 1.5 percentage points over a 10-year period.
• Roughly two-thirds of U.S. occupations (over 900 occupation) are exposed to some degree of automation
by AI.
• Of those occupations that are exposed, roughly a quarter to as much as half of their workload could be
replaced.
• Most jobs and industries are partially exposed to automation
• Complemented rather than substituted by AI

Using ChatGPT for assignments
• ChatGPT is a powerful AI chatbot that can generate
text on various topics and tasks, such as essays, articles,
math problems, etc.
• May produce text that contains reused phrases or ideas
from other sources, which can raise ethical and
academic issues
• If you use an answer or essay generated by the chatbot,
you have not created the work yourself

Prompt: A robot writing an essay on a paper

What’s Wrong with ChatGPT’s response?

ChatGPT may generate fictional events, describing nonexistent objects or

places, providing inaccurate details, provide fake references, etc 25
Appropriate use of GenAI chatbots
• GenAI chatbots may create response which
contains errors or outdated information
• ChatGPT is NOT a reliable tool for factual
information
• Always verify any critical or time-sensitive
information from reliable sources.
• Reputable news outlets, scientific studies, verified
databases, government websites, online
encyclopedia, …
• Add you own ideas, research results to
improve upon what AI can generates

ChatGPT is Changing Classrooms Forever
• Ethan Mollick, a professor at the Wharton School of Business at University of Pennsylvania, thinks
that AI is Undetectable, Ubiquitous, and Transformative
• AI-generated explanations, testing material, personalized instruction, create teaching simulations, …

• Expecting more from students
• Students will be challenged to complete more advanced tasks, produce higher quality work and achieve
better outcomes.
• University education should focus more on critical thinking, problem-solving, communication skills,
and diverse learning experiences.
• Universities need to prepare students for AI's influence on various job sectors.

Assessing Student-Generated Content
• Measure students' learning outcomes in a subject discipline, such as their competencies,
knowledge or skills, without the use of generative AI tools
• Methods
• Make the assignment/project “AI immune”
• Face-to-face, closed-book assessments in-class assessment
• Heavier weight in final exam
• Reflection papers with an oral defense
• Oral synchronous assessment
• Authentic (real-world tasks) assessments
• Complex tasks/project investigated over a sustained period
• Other alternatives formats: Video production, drama, create games, etc
• More focus on evaluating the process

35
Assessing Human/AI collaboration competencies
• Student co-create knowledge with AI.
• May restrict how GenAI can be used
• Planning, as a core part of the task, for self-testing, or as a copyediting tool
• Students should
• Properly document the use of GenAI
• Demonstrate proficiency in using AI tools effectively
• Enhance/Produce better than what can be achieved by AI
