1. Consider the eigenvalue problem y 00 + 6y 0 + (3 − 2λ)y = 0, y(0) = 0, y(3) = 0.
Find the eigenvalues less than −3 , that is λ < −3 , and the associated eigenfunctions.

2. Set up the boundary-value problem for the temperature u(x, t) of a laterally insulated rod with length 75cm if
the left end of the rod is held at temperature zero and the right end is insulated. The initial temperature at all points
on the rod (except the endpoints)is given by the distance from the point to the left endpoint of the rod. The standard
heat equation is ut = kuxx .
(1.5)
3. Suppose a rod, 60cm long, with insulated lateral surface has an initial temperature given by f (x) = 3x. At time
t = 0 the two ends of the rod are put in ice water at 0o C.
3.1 Take k = 2 cm2 /s and use the formula sheet to find a series solution for the temperature u(x, t). You must
evaluate the relevant Fourier coefficients.
(2)
3.2 Suppose we approximate the temperature at the midpoint of the rod after 20 seconds with the first non-zero
term of the series in 3.1. Use the alternating series estimate theorem to give an estimate of the absolute value of the
error that is made with this approximation.

4. Consider the boundary value problem
Separation of variables is used to derive a series solution for the boundary value problem.
4.1 Show completely that we get the following two ordinary differential equations from the heat equation
X 00 + λX = 0, T 0 + (3λ + 4)T = 0
(1.5)
4.2 A solution for the differential equation T 0 + (3λ + 4)T = 0 is T (t) = e(−3λ−4)t.
Still use separation of variables and the result of 4.1 to derive a series solution for u(x, t).
Determine any relevant coefficients without integration.
Hint: A trigonometric identity may simplify the process of determining the coefficients.

5. Consider the boundary value problem
5.1 Find h(x) such that the transformation y(x, t) = w(x, t) + h(x) transforms the problem to a standard wave
equation problem.
(3)
5.2 Give the initial value w(x, 0).
(1)
5.3 Use the formula sheet to find a series solution for w(x, t). Write out the relevant integral completely such that
the integrand doesn’t contain an absolute value function. Do not evaluate the integral(s).

5.4 Give y(3, 4).
