MATHEMATICS 6 - SURFACE AREA AND

VOLUME
Surface Area- is the total area of the surface or layer of a 3D model or figure.

To find the surface area of a cube, calculate the area of one face and multiply it by 6, since a cube has
six faces and each face has the same area. (mathematical expression: SA= 6²)

Rectangular prisms have 6 faces. To get the surface area, we need to find the area of each face
(multiply length by width, length by height, and height by width) and add it up. Since every two faces
have the same measurement, we have to multiply the sum of each face by 2. [mathematical
expression: SA= 2(lw + lh + wh)]

Square Pyramids have 5 faces: the base, and the four lateral faces (the lateral faces are the triangular
faces that go around the pyramid). We need to find the area of all of these and add them up to get the
surface area. (mathematical expression: B + 4 (bxh/2)

Cylinders consist of two base circles (top and bottom) and a rectangle. To calculate the surface area,
we have to add the two bases to the rectangle. (mathematical expression: SA= 2πr² + 2πrh)

When it comes to cone, we have 2 surfaces that we have to find the area of and add those areas
together to get the total surface area. We have the area of the base and the lateral area. The lateral
area is the area of the curved surface. (mathematical expression: SA = πr² + πrh or SA = B + LA)

In calculating the surface area of the sphere and cone, learning the area of a circle is needed.

The ratio of the circumference of the circle to it's diameter is pi (π). Pi can also be converted into 3.14.
The radius (r) of a circle is the line segments from it's center to it's perimeter. (mathematical
expression: A = πr²)

The surface area of a sphere is defined as the amount of region covered by the surface of a sphere.
(mathematical expression: SA = 4πr²)

Volume- the amount of space a 3D object takes up.

The volume of a cylinder is the amount of space in it. It can be obtained by multiplying its base area by
its height. (mathematical expression: V= πr²h or V = Bh)
The volume of a cone with the height and radius is calculated by applying the formula, Volume of a
cone (mathematical expression: V = ⅓πr²h or V = ⅓bh) . In this formula , “r” is the radius of the base,
and “h” is the height of the cone.

The volume of a pyramid is calculated by (mathematical expression: V= ⅓bh). This means that the
volume of a pyramid is one-third the volume of a prism with the same base and height.

We can find the volume of a cube by using (mathematical expression: V= e³). The letter "e" in the
formula stands for edge which a cube has three of.

The volume of a rectangular prism is found using the formula ( V= lenght x width x height or V = bh).
