Short Answer:

(5 points): Explain THREE reasons for the Fall of Rome:

- Christianity causes people to be pacifists, which decreases military size

- Monetary value declines
- Government is unstable due to many assassinations of emperors
- People stop caring about their empire
- Invasions from tribes
- Money is being spent on churches, not on necessary repairs and maintenance

(5 points): Explain the Divine Right Theory:

- The idea that God chooses King

(5 points): How would the church have influenced your life in the Middle Ages? (There are several
reasons, but explain at least TWO ways the church would have influence over your life)

- The church could excommunicate (kick you out of church)

o Important bc church was all you would have as a serf

- You could move up in the church, but not in everyday life

- The church held the keys to heaven, so you would do as the church said

(10 points): The Magna Carta serves as the first example of the relationship between the people and
their government. Four principles emerge from this document. Explain each in correct space below:

Limited Government: the idea that restrictions are now placed on the government. There
boundaries that government must act within.

The Rule of Law: nobody is above the law – the king is held to same laws as the people

Individual Rights: you are granted certain rights from God (or nature) that nobody can take away,
such as life, liberty, and the right to own property

Shared Power: the king no longer has complete authority – his power is now shared between two or
more groups.
