Date Give: Monday 31st March

Date Due: Monday 7th April (during this week you will share your speech)
JSV SPEAKS Homework 3: Practising my speech
Last week, lots of the school celebrated JSV SPEAKS. Due to our schedule, Year 6 will
prepare our speeches this week. You have all written or thought about a speech for
previous homework. Next, we need to turn these into something you can say aloud!
You have until next week to practise. Your class teacher will tell you when you will
share your speech with the class.
Point 1:
We want this to be an enjoyable experience for you and so we have chosen the
subject ‘I Went Somewhere Great.’ You are the expert on your own subject. So, we
are not going to worry about saying exactly the words in the written speech… you
can change it as you go and speak from the heart – it’s your story and nobody else
knows different!
Point 2:
We will be a friendly and supportive audience. The aim will be for everyone to enjoy
speaking and so all listeners will be open to only giving positive feedback and
celebrating ‘you.’
Should I prepare slides/photos or a PowerPoint? No.
-The task is not to have a perfectly memorised word-for-word speech, but to know
what you want to say and speak as confidently as you can.
-These speeches are short (max 3 mins) and we want students to speak from the
heart, not a PowerPoint or words on a script/computer.
-Students can bring/send one photo or bring in one object as a starting hook, if they
like... but it isn’t needed or required.
Task 1: Turn your speech into a ‘key points’ list.
You read the teacher speech for the last homework. What they actually said on the
day had lots of small differences… but that didn’t matter. The main stories and ideas
were shared.

They took their speech and turned it into bullet points… they are the key messages
and points to remind them what to say:
Now, your turn… On a post-it note(s), or piece of
card, list the most important points in your speech
so you remember what to say… how many points
do you need?
You can redo this multiple times as you practise
speaking and learn what is hard to remember.

Task 2: Practise, Practise, Practise!

The aim is to go ‘script free’ (but have the post it note/card available if you need it!).
The more you practise, the better you will feel!
Ideas and tips:
-Speak it to yourself
-Speak it in chunks (learn and repeat small parts)
-Speak it to the mirror
-Speak it to a pet/the garden/a toy!
-Perform it to your family or other people at home!
Task 3: Extra Speech Skills
You can now consider extra speaking skills. We use P-PIPES to guide us. You could
focus on one of these and talk about it at home! THE TOP TIP = SMILE!
