Task 1: Computer and Devices

What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic device that can store, retrieve and process data.
You can use it to type documents, draw images, listen to music, watch movies, communicate
with friends and much more.
Today, different types of computers are available on the market which vary in size and power.
Personal Computers are the ones that you have in your house or school.
Types of computers:
1- Desktop computers.
2- Laptop Computers or Notebooks.
3-Servers.
4-Other types of computers:
-Supercomputers.
-Tablet computers
-Smartphones
-Game Consoles
Hardware and Software:
Hardware: Is the electrical and mechanical parts of a computer. Its all the parts that make up the
computer like the monitor , the motherboard, the chips.

Software: is a collection of all programs that are installed on a computer, these are programs that
you need in order to operate you computer such as the operating system or applications that you
need to be able to work like Microsoft word or adobe Photoshop.

The main parts of computer


-The motherboard: Main circuit of the computer which all other parts are connected to
-CPU: Central Processing Unit ( contains out > CU Control Unit, ALU Arithmetic
Logic Unit)
-RAM: Random Access Memory
-HDD: Hard Disk Drive
-Video Card

Peripheral Devices:
Devices are connected to a computer, but they are not part of it.
-Input Devices ( keyboard, mouse, gamepad, microphone, digital camera, web cam, scanner,
pointing devices)
-Output Devices ( monitor, virtual reality, printer, speakers, google glass)
-Input/output devices: devices that both input and output data into and from the computer
( like: storage devices, touch screen, HDD, optical discs, CD, DVD, Blu-ray Drive, Memory
card USB)
Task 2: The Operating System
What is an Operating system or what does the operating system do or why is the operating
system important or mention the tasks that the operating system does?
An operating system helps us to operate the computer, and it is important because:
1- The operating system controls the hardware of the computer, use the computer’s
resources and to try to distribute them properly.
2- It manages the available computer memory and allocates the required amount of memory
each program needs and the time CPU will spend.
3- It manages the peripheral devices or storage devices.
4- The most important task is to provide all tools the user needs to control the computer

- There is an easy way to open a program, is to click the search icon and type the name
of the program you want to open.
- When you want save a document or a draw on MS paint for example, you have to save
it through the FILE tab > Save As
- This PC is the place where you can find all the storage devices and the network
places that connected to your computer

Task 3: Files and Folders:

What is a Folder?
A Folder is a location on the hard disk drive where you can save your files.

What is a File?
A file is a collection of data such as texts, photos, videos, music, etc
Why we use folders and files?
Use folders to organize your files so that you can easily find them.
To create a folder:
1- Decide where you want the location of your folder
2- right click on the mouse
3- press new
4- folder
5- type the name of your folder
To add a folder inside a folder, either you create by
previous steps or you press on Home tab inside the main
folder, and press new folder

- Copy/move/find folder/shortcut/compressed files/change icon size > refer to the book


- Recycle bin: a place where your deleted files go into.

Task 4& 5: Basic Settings/ some hints & tips:
You can reach to the settings of your computer from start button > Settings

 You can reach to screen settings from start> settings >System> Display
 You can reach to mouse settings from start > settings > Devices> mouse
 You can reach to a program or application settings from
start> settings>Apps
- For date &time:
If you want to adjust the date & time from task bar > date & time > right
click > Adjust date & time
 To personalize your computer, right click on any empty space on
the desktop > personalize
 To adjust your system sound from task bar > right click on sound >
open volume mixer.
 To customize your desktop you can control the task bar by adding a
tick to lock the task bar
 You can rearrange the desktop icons or change the size of the icons
 Multitasking: MS Windows allows you to work with many programs at
the same time. You can arrange them from task bar> right click >
choose cascade windows or show windows stacked and you can undo
your options.
 From task manager you can manage all the programs running on
your computer
