1. (a) A researcher estimated the model, Yi= ~o + ~1Xi + u., for i = 1,2, ... ,13,
where Yi is the average hourly wage, and Xi, is the years of schooling. When
the results are being printed out, the printer malfunctioned, smudging some
of the results. With the information already provided, fill in the blanks.

Pi = Population: the number of people living within a three-mile radius

of the Woody's location

2. (a) A researcher wants to estimate consumption function of the form,

Consumption, = Po + PI Income; + ei for a district in Delhi for the year
2020. The sample data collected is given as follows :
4987 5,

Consumption (Rs.'000) 2 5 4 3 5 7 4 2 6 2
Income (Rs. '000) 11 8 10 8 12 11 12 9 10 9

Estimate the slope and intercept coefficients using ordinary least squares
method.

(b) A cross country analysis was conducted to estimate wage equation for the
year 2022. The researcher added an irrelevant variable on weather of a
country measured by the temperature in degree Celsius to the model. The
results obtained are as follows :

Model I:

Wage= 10.3 + 0.63 Education R2 = 0.74 f?.2 = 0.73

Model II:

Wage= 10.25 + 0.69 Education+ 0.02 Weather R2 = 0.75 IF= 0.72

Should the researcher choose Model II on the basis of R-square? Explain

your answer.

properties of Ordinary Least Squares estimators. (6x3=18)

Correlation with Extreme Small Samples or Many Regressor,;.' Econometrica, vol. 45, November 1977, pp. 1989-96 and as corrected by R. W. Farebrother,

Example E.1.
Ifn = 40andk' =4,dL = l.285anddu= 1.721.Ifacomputeddvalueisless than
1.285, there is evidence of positive first-order serial correlation; if it is greater
than 1.721, there is no evidence of positive first-order serial correlation; but if
d lies between the lower and the upper limit, there is inconclusive evidence
regarding the presence or absence of positive first-order serial correlation.
