EXPERIMENT NO 12
DECTECTION OF CATION AND ANION IN THE GIVEN SALT SAMPLE
SAMPLE 4- IRON[II] SULPHATE AIM- to detect the cation and anion in the given salt sample. INSTRUCTION- i) Make a solution of the sample in a suitable solvent to obtain the stock solution . ii)take this stock solution to identify the cation in the sample using NaOH and NH4OH as reagents and confirm the cation. iii) applying logical steps of analysis deduce the anion in the given sample. iv) write your observations and inference with relevant equations. PROCEDURE- EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE 1) Colour of the sample Pale green Presence of Cu2+ or Fe2+ ions. 2) Texture Crystalline Absence of Carbonates and Oxides 3) Making of stock Sample dissolves giving a Sample is water soluble. solution- dissolve the clear pale green solution Therefore stock solution is sample in water made using water. 4) CATION ANALYSIS a) To OS add little NaOH A dirty green precipitate Cation may be C solution is seen b) To the above add Precipitate remains Cation confirmed to be Fe2+ excess NaOH solution insoluble c) Allow the precipitate Dirty green precipitate Fe2+ - 1 e- → Fe 3+ on exposure to stand for 10 Mins slowly turns reddish to air brown at the top d) To the OS add NH4OH A dirty green precipitate Cation is may be Fe2+ ion solution first little is seen e) To the above add Precipitate remains Cation confirmed to be Fe2+ excess NH4OH insoluble solution 5) ANION ANALYSIS a) To the sample add No effervescence seen Anion is not CO32-, SO32- S2- dil.HCl Anion may be SO42-, Cl- or NO3- b) To the OS addBaCl2 White precipitate seen Anion is may be SO42- solution c) To the above add Dil white precipitate remains Anion is confirmed to be SO42- HCl insoluble ion. White precipitate is that of BaSO4 FINAL DEDUCTION 1) IUPAC NAME OF THE SALT- IRON[II]SULPHATE 2) SOLUBILITY – salt is water soluble 3) EQUATION S FOR CATION ANALYSIS i) FeSO4 (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) → Fe(OH)2↓ + Na2SO4 little ii) Fe(OH)2 + 2NaOH (aq) → NO REACTION Excess iii) FeSO4 (aq) + 2NH4OH (aq) →Fe(OH)2↓ + (NH4)2SO4 Little iv) Fe(OH)2 + NH4OH (aq) → no reaction Excess 4) ANION ANALYSIS I) FeSO4 + HCl → no reaction II) STEP 1- FeSO4 (aq) + BaCl2 (aq) → FeCl2 + BaSO4 ↓ III) STEP 2- BaSO4 + HCl → NO REACTION Diagrams to be drawn on the adjacent un-ruled sheet
