Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Most of the people know and had heard the word ‘studying’. Studying has been the
most basic and common word, that everybody uses, in order to know and learn something.
From a child up to being an adult, studying can be used in all aspect of life. According to
Cambridge Dictionary, studying or study means to learn about a subject, especially in an
educational course or by reading books. Another definition by The Britannica Dictionary
states that studying is an organized experiment in which many things are looked at, measured,
recorded, etc. in order to learn more about something. In addition, it is something that a
person studies or gives attention to.

The time spent on studying may have an impact to the students, especially in the
academic aspect of their lives. Every Students has different study time preferences,
depending on the amount of content they are studying or the amount of time they usually
prefer to study. Some students study for 1-2 hours and some of them studies for 4-5 hours.
According to Non and Tempelaar (2015) in the study that was entitled ‘Time Preferences,
Study Effort, and Academic Performance’ difference in individuals’ time preferences may
also help to explain the extent to which individuals are successful in education. The result of
the study conducted by Liu (2022) in his Article that was entitled ‘The relationship between
Students’ Study Time and Academic performance and its Practical Significant relationship
between the investment on study and students grades which can indicate the more study time,
the better academic performance. Other researcher states that

even if they are helping the student with their study time schedules, there is still no
significant connection. Helping students create clear schedules and providing them with
periodic reminder has no detectable effect on student grades or credit accumulation
(Oreopoulos et al., 2018)

Other study shows that there is correlation or connection between the time spent on
studying and the academic performance of students According to (Katawazai, Zayraey,
Stanikzai, 2023), the findings of their study revealed that there is a correlation between the
two variables (time spent and academic performance) and that students also need to know
that time is potential factor in their academic success if managed well.

The primary goal of this study is to investigate and explore the relationship of the
amount of time spent on studying, and the academic performance of the Grade 10 students in
San Miguel National High school. This Study seeks to find if there is a positive or negative
relationships between the study time and the students’ achievements. In addition, this study
aims to find the best study time that can be used and applicable to other students who are
struggling with their study time. We will be using statistics in getting the results to the study
for a clear and specific findings. All in all, this study aims to asses if there is a significant
connection of the number of hours spent in studying as to the academic achievements of the
students, in order for us to determine and better understand the exact and clear relationship of
the two variables, since the relationship of two has many differences.

Theoretical Framework

The theories namely: Palm Beach study time Learning Theory and the Conditional
Relationship Theory supported this study. Palm Beach Study time learning theory was
postulated and hypothesize in the late 1864 by professor palm beach professor in the
University of California this theory states that study is practical and crucial tool that is used to
fore tell and control the students learning outcome. It also provides the foundation for the
impact of study time on the learning outcome of the student. It shows how the amount of time
students spend studying effects how much they learn (Mensah and Yankwah, 2022). This
theory can either be rejected or accepted, depending on the result of the study.

The relationship between the two variable can be complex, knowing that there are
many possible results when it comes to the learning performance outcomes of the students,
Thus, further research is needed to shed light between the relationship of study time and
academic performance.

Conceptual Framework

The independent variable of this study is the study time of the students while the
dependent variable is the academic performance. In the figure 1 above, it shows the study’s

conceptual framework. The first box is demographic profile of the respondents which

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

I. Related Literature

There are also many factor was which can affect the outcome of the academic
performance of students. Many studies have revealed that several factors account for the
grades, such as gender, IQ, study. Greater allotted instructional time has a statistically
significant and positive impact on a school’s average academic achievement (Jez and
Wassmer, 2015). In addition, the time that is used for self-study is positively associated with
grades and the effect is similar by gender, ability and field of study impact of study time is
greater than that of course load (Miao,2023). It is also shown that students who studied 4
hours to 6 hours per week had a better tendency to become great scorers (Zubair, et al.,
2024). Determining the relationship between study time and the academic performance of
students may have different possible outcomes- either positive or negative.

The relationship between the two variables can be complex and under. A several
studies have obtained inconsistent result for the relation between study time academic
achievement drawing clear conclusion from these studies is problematic (HUANG ,2015).
Negative result can also be seen when determining the relation of study time and academic
performance although study hours also correlate with academic performance their impact is
relativity minor

compared to previous test scores (Trujillo et al,2024) other suggest to increase the amount of
study time in order to increase academic success of the students.

Local

Even if there are literatures that states the positive relationship between study time
and academic, negative results between the two variables are visible particularly on the study
time preferences of the students. Other literature states that there is no significant connection
between managing the time and the subject. There was no significant relationship between
time management and math performance (Peteros, et al. 2021) .Having little time in studying
may also affect the academic performances of the students .Finding showed that less study
hour ,results in a poor grade and performances (Relucio,2019).Furthermore ,it is also stated
that the senior high school student from grade 11have poor study habits and they do not
spend too much time in studying ,which led them into a situation that had effected their
academic performances.

There are also many factors which hinders the students study time that affect their
performances. Procrastination is one of the factors that hinders the students to manage their
time spent on studying. It is strongly agreed when it comes to the extent of student’s
academic procrastination affecting their time managements (Paguio, 2019). Procastination
negatively affects achievements (Santos et al., 2022).

The number of hour that is spent on studying can be linked in the academic
achievements of the student. According to Capinding (2021), a highly significant link is
discovered between the number of hour spent on studying and the academic performance.
The relationship between the two variables may be influenced by many factors resulting to
the differences of outcomes.

Study time may have an influence towards the academic success of the students. The
result of the study conducted by Xhomara (2018) states that, there is a medium positive
correlation between the amount of student’s study time and the academic achievements of
student’s variables, in which, high levels of amount of student’s study time is associated with
high levels of academic achievements of students. Other study state that study time can be an
important factor for academic success and that student must manage their time in studying.
Student academic achievement will be at risk if they don’t pay serious attention to managing
their study time Nair, et al., (2021). Their studies state that students must wisely manage their
study time on a daily, weekly, and semesterly basis to achieve academic success.
Furthermore, managing their time also helps in managing problems live procrastination,
external matters and other trivial issues that prove to be barriers within the course of
achievement of the desired goals and objectives (Kapur, 2018).

There can be other factor which affect the academic achievements of the students.
Many students were unable to responsibly manage their time due to external distractions such
as electronic devices, fatigue, environment, stress and procrastination (Yi Xuen et al.,2023).
In addition, they concluded in their study that study time is one of the most important factor
affecting the student’s scores, since it was seen that the correlation strength among test score
and student hour is positive and greater than the age and income factor. The result of the

student conducted by significant and positive association with their academic performance,
which indicates that academic performance increases with the increase in self-study hours.
However, the amount of time that students spend on studying can vary widely, depending on
various

factors such as study obligations course workload, learning style, student’s motivation and
etc. (Skrbinjek, 2023).

Local Literature

There can be situations where the amount of time is used in studying for a particular
or results are not correlated. According to the findings of the study it has been found out that
there is no relationship between the two variables that length of study time cannot affect the
grade in math subject (Acedera et al.,2019). In addition, to their study time subject is not
about having long length of studying instead it is all about understanding the topic.
Furthermore, (Matinay, 2017) states that there is no correlation among the variables and the
researchers concluded that the number of hours spent in studying isn’t always applicable for
all of students.

The time preferences in studying may vary among the students, depending what
works best for them or level in which they are comfortable with. Most of the STEM students
preferred to spend their time in 1hour study session before the quarterly assessment in
Biology, Chemistry 2 and Physics. While some of the students preferred not to study before
the quarterly assessment (Pascual et al., 2017). Every student has different study time and not
all the students has the same practices when it comes to the number of hours spent in
studying. Results show that spohomores from CSQC (Claret School of Quezon City) and

PSHS (Philippine Science High School) have different practices in the number of hours spent
for studying, relaxation and recreational activities. There are still many students who are
struggling when it comes to studying, not knowing how to properly manage their study time.
Many students today have difficulty with the state of their studies (Atienza et al., 2021). In
addition, it is also crucial for the students to prioritize and organize their time based on what
is most important to them (De Jesus and Gracia, 2023). Determining the relationship
between the two variable can be

difficult, considering the factors which affects them. Therefore, thorough investigation is
needed for a clear outcome of the study.

III. Synthesis

The researcher gathered several literatures and studies both foreign and local to show
the important link or relationship of study time to the academic performance of the students.
It also addressed how the study time affects the students’ academic achievements or their
performance at school. The foreign literatures and studies states that there is a positive and
negative outcome between the two variables. The amount of time that spent on self-study
positively affect the final marks of the students. It is also stated that the relationship between
the two variables can be complex or unclear considering the inconsistent results of the
literatures some literatures stated
that the academic achievement will be at risk if they don’t pay serious attention when it
comes to managing their studies.

The local literatures and studies revealed that less study time will result to poor grades
and performance among Filipino students .Other studies conducted that there is a link
between the two variables ,furthermore there are studies in the Philippines that reveals the
