Introduction

This course provides students with a comprehensive understanding of data visualization


techniques using both Tableau and Power BI. Students will learn how to create visually
compelling and informative representations of data. Students will also have a few open
source tools for data manipulation, visualization techniques, and statistical analysis
methods.

Data, Classification of Data, Data visualization, Categories of Data Visualization, Principles of
effective data visualization, Gestalt principles of visual perception, Data Preparation, Data
Cleaning, Data type conversion, Missing value treatment, Data summarization.

Unit II: Data Visualization No of hours (L,T,P): 4,0,4

Introduction to Tableau, Connecting to Data Source: Text Files, Excel, Access, other
databases, merging multiple data sources, Univariate Charts, Bivariate Charts, Multivariate
Charts and Maps.

Unit III: Dashboards and Interactive Visualizations No of hours (L,T,P): 4,0,4


Principles of effective Dashboards, Interactive features and functions of dashboards,
Creating new fields, users of functions.

Unit IV: Customizing Visualizations No of hours (L,T,P): 4,0,4


Introduction to power BI, Creating Dashboards in power BI. Discussion on a few best open
source tools for visualization.

Unit V: Applications of Data Visualization No of hours (L,T,P): 4,0,4


Case Study, Art of storytelling through Visulas, [include names of a few open source tools.

Assignments are given based on case studies or application of theories, project is to be
evaluated for problem identification and formulation, application of theory for solution
and presentation. End-term paper shall be application oriented predominantly testing the
application and analysis capabilities of candidates preferably to be a practical
examination to be conducted in computer lab
