O’clock -- exact hour (8 o’clock)


NOT: six fifteen o’clock

A.M. - From 12 midnight to 11:59 in the morning.


P.M. - From 12 noon to 11:59 at night.
O’clock → en punto.
O’clock se usa para indicar la hora exacta,
sin minutos adicionales. For example: It's
three o'clock (3 p.m.).

"A quarter after" es una forma más coloquial


para decir "y cuarto".
For example: It's nine fifteen OR It's a
quarter after nine→ Son las nueve y
quince / Son las nueve y cuarto.
"Twenty after" es una forma alternativa para
decir "y veinte".
For example: It's five twenty / It's twenty
after five → Son las cinco y veinte

"Half past" es una manera común de decir "y


media".
For example: It's ten thirty / It's half past

• Telling time digitally (saying the exact numbers on


the clock: It’s eleven forty-five) is more common than
the traditional way (using expressions like a quarter to:
It’s a quarter to twelve).

• English speakers use oh and NOT zero to tell time.


They say eight oh three for 8:03 and ten oh five for
10:05.

• In the U.K., the 24-hour clock is normally used


instead of a.m. / p.m. for train, bus, and air timetables.
The 12-hour clock is normally used in the U.S., Canada,
and Australia.

British English: soccer is called football.

To ask about time (now): What time is it?


We can answer: It’s 5 o’clock OR five o’clock (It’s = now)

To ask about the day (now): What day is it?


We can answer: It’s Saturday OR Saturday

To ask about time of an event: What time is the movie?


We can answer: It’s at seven o’clock OR At 7 o’clock (At = future event)

To ask about the day of an event: What day is the concert?


We can answer: It’s on Sunday OR On Sunday (It’s on = future events)

To ask about the time or day of an event: When is the dance?


We can answer: It’s at 8 o’clock. It’s on Friday OR It’s at 8 o’clock on Friday OR It’s
on Friday at 8 o’clock

Use ORDINAL NUMBERS (to talk about positions, the rank of something,
and dates) - (1st, 2nd, 3rd).
Use CARDINAL NUMBERS (to talk about quantity and dates) For example:

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE

We can use ordinal numbers to say dates; for example; January fifteenth.
In formal writing, use cardinal numbers; for example, January 15.
It is common to use ordinal numbers in informal writing.

In British English, when dates are written giving the month as a word, the number may precede
or follow the month: January 15 OR 15 January.
In American English, the number always follows the month.
