1. Structure of the Competition
The Competition will be structured as per the following format:
a. Preliminary Round
b. Pre-Quarter Finals Round (if required)
c. Quarter-Finals Round
d. Semi-Finals Round
e. Final Round
2. Language of the Competition
a. The written and oral language of the competition shall be English.
b. Oralists will only answer in Urdu when asked by the Judge in Urdu for a
specific question.
3. Eligibility
Student pursuing LL.B degree program are eligible to participate in the Competition.
NOTE: Participation is compulsory for Final Year students.
4. Team Composition
Each team, for the competition, shall compromise of two-three members i.e. two
Oralists and one Researcher (optional).
5. Team Identification
a. Each team shall be assigned an anonymous code upon their registration to
ensure fairness.
b. This code number will become the identifier for the team throughout the
competition.
6. Memorials
a. All memorials submitted for the purpose of the competition shall strictly adhere
to the Official Rules of the Competition. Each team participating in the
competition must prepare ONE Memorial on behalf of
Appellants/Petitioner(s) and ONE on behalf of the
Defendants/Respondent(s).

b. Each Team must research, write, edit, and develop its own legal and factual
arguments without the assistance of persons who are not Team Members. Any
Team that receives outside assistance may be penalized and may be disqualified
from the Competition.
c. Each team has to submit 4 hard copies of the memorials from each side. Non-
Compliance will entail a penalty.
d. The memorials shall not contain any form of identification apart from the team
code. The hard copy of memorial must be exact replica of the soft copy
submitted.
e. Memorials submitted in soft copy must be in PDF format. Soft copies of
memorial must be emailed to [email protected]
f. Hard copy of memorials must be in tape binding.
g. Memorials must not exceed to 25 pages.
7. Guidelines for Drafting Memorials
I. Memorial Structure
The memorial must have following pages only:
a. Cover Page (Team Code on right hand corner, Name of Court, Title of Case,
Memorial for Petitioners/Respondents and Year of competition)
b. Table of Contents
c. Index of Authorities
d. Statement of Facts
e. Statement of Jurisdiction
f. Issues Raised
g. Summary of Arguments
h. Pleadings/ Arguments Advanced
i. Prayer
II. Referencing Style
The memorials must adhere to following rules for citing references.
a. The references are required to be put in footnotes.
b. The Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA)
III. Format
a. Team Code-Top Right corner of Cover Page
b. Page Size: A4
c. Font Type-Times New Roman
d. Font Size
e. Headings-14
f. Body Text-12

l. Page Margins – 1 inch on all sides except the left margin which must be 1.5
inches. (Or Top, Bottom, Right = 2.54 cm. each, Left = 3.18 cm.)
m. The Hard Copies of the Memorials shall be printed on one side only.
8. Evaluation Criteria for Memorials
Every Memorial shall be marked on scale of 30 (for Oralists and 60 for
Researcher) and shall be evaluated according to the following criteria:

4. Oral Rounds
a. Each Oral Round of the competition consists of 25 minutes.
b. Format for the Oral Rounds:
Oralist 1 for Appellants/ Petitioners
Oralist 2 for Appellants/ Petitioners
➢ Oralist 1 for Defendants/ Respondents
➢ Oralist 2 for Defendants/ Respondents
Rebuttals by Appellants/ Petitioners
Surrebuttals by Defendants/ Respondents
c. In case any Opponent Team fails to appear in an Oral Round, the Rounds shall
be conducted ex-parte and the scoring shall be done as if the defaulter Team
had been present and arguing.
d. Before the start of the Oral Rounds of any Team, the Oralist of the Team shall
inform the Court Room Officers regarding the order of speaking as well as
allocation of time between themselves and the time reserved for Rebuttal.
Once so informed, these timings may not be changed. If an Oralist speaks for
more than the time reserved for him, the extra time used by such Oralist shall
be deducted from the time allotted to the second Oralist of that team. If the

second Oralist exceeds the time allotted to him/her, such time exceeded shall be

deducted from the time reserved for Rebuttals.

e. Teams, while submitting their oral arguments, may not pass any material for
reference to the Judges, unless asked for by the judges.
f. During an Oral Round, Oralists at the podium and participants seated at counsel
table may not operate, for any purpose, mobile phones, laptop computers,
PDAs, or any other computing or electronic devices, including but not limited
to those which are internet-enabled or data-capable, or have instant messaging
capabilities. All such devices must be turned off and removed from sight as
soon as the bailiff first enters the courtroom, and must remain off and out of
sight until the conclusion of the Oral Round.
g. At any time, no team can contact and seek advice, or assistance of any kind
from another participating team. Failure to comply with this rule shall result in
immediate disqualification of the team from the Moot.
h. Any Team which violates any of the Rules with respect to the Oral Rounds
may be penalized. The decision of the Judges shall be final in this regard.
5. Evaluation Criteria For Oral Rounds
The Oral Pleadings would be marked on scale of 30 per Judge and would be evaluated
on the following grounds:

6. Competition Prizes
Following prizes will be awarded.
a. Winner and Runners up
b. Best Memorial
c. Best Speaker/Oralist (Preliminary Rounds)
d. Mooter of the Year (Overall)
7. Miscellaneous Rules
a. The Judges of the Moot have the right to question the entire team, including
the researcher with regards to the argument at hand.
b. The decision of the Judges regarding the allocation of marks shall be final.
c. To ensure uniformity, each Judge shall be briefed in advance regarding the

d. The Moot Court Committee has the discretion to disqualify any team if it fails
to comply with any of the rules set out in this document. The decision of the
Committee in this regard shall be deemed final.
e. The dress code for the Moot as well as any official functions in the duration of
the Moot shall be the official uniform for the legal fraternity in Pakistan.
