Biagal and Carlos Checa. Each cof them had joined Yamaha from Honda in 1988, and ater suring frequent frontend crashes, had ‘become convinced they needed a single-crankYZR500 if they were to win the historic final 500GP World championship held in 2001 before the advent of MotoGP forthe 2002 The rearward rotation of the ond NSREO0§ single crank reduced its gyroscopicinfluence ‘onthe handing, making the bike easier to turn, and loading the front ye betta for increased grip and enhenced fal, atthe expense of grater with. Bath Biaggland CCheca blamed ther hanaing dificaties onthe YZR5DO's tin conta-otating crank engine configuration, rather than its chassis desig, although the two cranks rotating n opposite directions delivered a more compact bil and cancelled torque reaction and czankshaf inet for fiendler power delivery. Indeed, according to HAC iroctorYoici Oguma, Honda had built such a twinrank engine sot inthe late 1980s to understand ‘what benefits such a format could provid, but never raced it because ‘of Honda's policy not to copy ts Japanese rivals techricaly. But the alan Paton teams 44/15 motor was a citferent matter, and Ogume openly confirmed Honds hed copied this in creating its V4 engine design hence the set of ur-obraniam Keihincaras which appeared on the Paton a gift from Honds! We signed Max Biagg in 1999, and the first time he rode our bike at Suzuka, he appreciated the bottom power ofthe engine, where it was very smooth and better than the Honda he'd been racing on before. But, he kept getting big wheelies around 10,000rom, in the bottom three gears —he wanted a more linear power delivery and mare progressive throttle response, We changed this, but at some cost, because if we smooth out the power delvery between 9000-11,000rpm, we lose some top-end power, as well as overrev Inthe end, we provided two or three diferent specifications to ach team, and we leave itto them to decide whichis best for aach rida ‘Our goal in development of the YZR500 engine isrideebilty, not so much high power. We now have a narrower 7E-degree vee {angle between the two banks of cylinders ‘on our twincrankshat V4 engine, after previously widening the angle for increased reed-valve area, Buta narrower angle is better for exhaust pipe layout and shape, so ty spacing the crankshaft slighty further ‘apart, we now have a good compromise, ‘And we make continuous improvements to the engine components throughout the season, ‘We had some complaints about the ‘YZA500 chassis being very sensitive and hard to setup - Checa and Biaggi especialy ‘complained about ths. | thnk the twin- ‘crankshaft engine layout of the YZRS00 is one reason for this whichis why we ‘at Yamaha exnerimented ths year with & ‘single crankshaft engine like the Honda INSR0O, with reverse crankshaft rotation, We wanted to dscoverif the gyroscopic effect of such an engine is mare beneficial to the handing, compared to aur present, {design with twin contraotating cranks, the effects of which of course cancel each other out. We weren't looking for any extra power or engine performance, oly diferent handing characteristics “We found that yes, the single-crank engine does handle better in certain circumstances, though not enough to justify the cost and disruption it would bring if ‘we developed such an alknaw engine for ‘our teams. Anyway, we could not supply all existing Yamaha tears with ths type of engine, and the cost would in any case be ‘much higher. Our existing YZA50O twin-crank gine has a much longer mileage than the singlecrank design, whichis a'so more ‘expansive to manufacture, “Therefore, for 2001 we will improve the existing machine. One araa willbe ‘eradynamies, after the success of our ‘YZR250, which won the 250ce World Championship this year thanks party to the efficiency ofits cowiling. We are developing ‘8 comparable design for the YZRS00, Last year, on the YZF250, Shinya Nakano Ccamplained about front grip exiting a tur, so we considered how to cure this prodlem, to0. One element was aerodynamics ~ the bike was lifting at the front. We need some lft for good top speed, to improve rear whee tive = but nat too much, otherwise it will takeoff! So we redesigned the cowiing, and fund a good compromise which also helped the top speed, At Mugello, we tested a new design of streamlining wich gave 3kph improvement compared tothe old type, with he exact same engine setting, and ths is whet we used to win the manufacturers! Championship Having accomplished its world championship mission in 2000, Yamaha pulled out of the 2506P class officially fr 2001, to focus on developing its new fourstroke MotoGP contender for 2002. Having first worked on a 500cc fourstioke GP project with seven valves per cylinder in he 1980s (Yamaha's whatif response to the ‘valpiston Honda NRSOD, which was never raced, chiro Yoda was appointed Technical Director for Yamaha's MotoGP YZR-MI four stroke contender, which Max Biaggi took to second place in MotoGP's 2002 debut season, winning three races. In the wake ofthe corporate shakeup inside Yamaha accompanying Valentino Rossi arrival there in 2004, Yoda was sidedined withthe appointment of Masao Furusawa over him. Yods-san then joined Kawasak in February 2005, where he was responsible fr eating the ZX-10R Superbike that took Tom Sykes to the World Superbike Championship in 2013, and Johnny Rea to a further six consecutive such las in 2015-2020, with Kawasaki winning he coveted Manufacturers’ crown in each of hase years.
