20 - KiCad Overview
20 - KiCad Overview
AIM: Provide an overview of the KiCad user interface (Project Manager, Schematic Editor,
PCB Editor). Design circuits such as Ohm's Law and Series-Parallel Resistor using the KiCad
schematic design tool.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:
1. Computer with KiCad software installed.
2. Basic electronic components (resistors, power supply, etc.) for reference.
3. User manual or guide for KiCad.
THEORY:
1. KiCad Overview:
▪ Project Manager: Manages project files and provides access to other tools.
o Ohm's Law states that V=I×R, where V is voltage, I is current, and R is resistance.
o A simple circuit to demonstrate Ohm's Law includes a voltage source and a resistor.

o In a parallel circuit, the total resistance is given by 𝑅𝑒𝑞 = 𝑅1 + 𝑅2 + 𝑅2
PROCEDURE:
1. Introduction to KiCad:
o Open KiCad and explain the main interface components: Project Manager, Schematic
Editor, and PCB Editor.
o Create a new project and save it in a designated folder.
5. Simulation:
o Use KiCad's simulation tools to verify the functionality of the designed circuits.
o Compare the simulated results with theoretical calculations.
OBSERVATIONS:
1. Record the steps taken to create the schematics for Ohm's Law and Series-Parallel Resistor
circuits.
2. Note the component values and connections in each circuit.
3. Observe the simulation results.
PRECAUTIONS:
1. Ensure all components are correctly placed and connected in the schematic.
2. Save the project frequently to avoid data loss.
3. Follow proper procedures for simulation and PCB layout to avoid errors.
