21 - 555 Timer & Regulator

The document outlines an experiment to design a 555 Timer circuit and a full-wave rectifier with a voltage regulator using the KiCad schematic design tool. It details the steps for creating the circuits, simulating them, and analyzing the results, with expected outcomes of a square wave generation and stable DC output. Additionally, it includes questions related to the purpose and functionality of the components used in the circuits.

STEPS TO PERFORM THE EXPERIMENT:

1. Design the 555 Timer Circuit in KiCad:

1. Open KiCad and create a new project.

2. Use the schematic editor to place the 555 Timer IC.
3. Add resistors, capacitors, and other components as per the circuit diagram.
4. Connect the components using wires.
5. Label the input (VCC) and output (Pin 3) for simulation.

2. Design the Rectifier with Voltage Regulator in KiCad:

1. In the new project, place the transformer, diodes, capacitors, and 7812 regulator.
2. Connect the components to form a full-wave rectifier and voltage regulator circuit.
3. Label the input (AC source) and output (regulated DC).

3. Simulate the Circuits:

1. Use KiCad's simulation tools to simulate the 555 Timer circuit.

o Verify the output waveform (square wave) on Pin 3.
2. Simulate the rectifier circuit.
o Verify the DC output voltage (5V) after the regulator.

4. Analyze the Results:

1. For the 555 Timer:

1.44
o Measure the frequency of the square wave using the formula 𝑓 = (𝑅1+2𝑅2)𝐶
o
Compare the calculated and simulated frequencies.
2. For the Rectifier:
o Measure the DC output voltage and ensure it is stable at 12 V.

EXPECTED RESULTS:

1. The 555 Timer circuit should generate a square wave with the expected frequency.
2. The rectifier circuit should provide a stable 12 V DC output.

QUESTIONS:

(1) What is the purpose of the 555 Timer IC in Astable mode?

(2) What is the function of the capacitor in the 555 Timer circuit?
(3) Why is a bridge rectifier used in the power supply circuit?
(4) What is the role of the 7812-voltage regulator in the circuit?
(5) How can you calculate the frequency of the square wave generated by the 555 Timer in
Astable mode?
(6) Write your conclusion.
