EXPERIMENT NO - 24 DATE :

AIM: Perform the footprint allocation process for all components in the schematic. Perform this
process on the same schematic designed in Practical 20/21.

SOFTWARE REQUIRED:

o KiCad

STEPS TO ASSIGN FOOTPRINTS IN KICAD:

1. Open Your Schematic in schematic editor

 Open KiCad and load your project containing the Ohm’s Law circuit schematic.
 Open the schematic editor.

2. Open the Footprint Assignment Tool

 Click on "Assign PCB footprints to schematic symbols"

 This will open the Footprint Assignment Editor, showing all components in your circuit.

3. Assign Footprints to Each Component

 For each component in your circuit (resistors, voltage sources, etc.), assign the appropriate
footprint:
o Resistors (R) →
Select Resistor_THT:R_Axial_DIN0309_L9.0mm_D3.2mm_P7.62mm
o Capacitors (if any) →
Choose Capacitor_THT:C_Disc_D5.0mm_W2.5mm_P2.54 mm
o Voltage Source or Battery → Assign the relevant footprint like
BatteryHolder_Keystone_103_1xAA (for battery sources).
o Connectors (if any) → Choose an appropriate pin header or terminal block footprint.

4. Use the Footprint Library to Search

 If you are unsure about which footprint to use, click on the "Filter by library" button and
search for the best match.

5. Apply and Save

 After assigning footprints, click "OK" to save the assignments.

 In the main schematic editor, click "Update PCB from Schematic" to transfer the
footprint assignments to the PCB layout.

6. Proceed to PCB Layout

 Open the PCB Editor and start arranging the components to design your PCB.

QUESTIONS:

(1) What is the purpose of assigning footprints to components in KiCad?

(2) Which tool in KiCad is used to assign footprints to schematic components?
(3) How do you update the PCB layout after assigning footprints in KiCad?
(4) What footprint would you typically assign to a standard axial resistor in a through-hole
design?
(5) Why is it important to correctly assign footprints before generating the PCB layout?
(6) Write your conclusion.
