Decimals

Grade 6

1. Understanding Decimals

 A decimal number consists of a whole number and a fractional part separated by a

decimal point (e.g., 3.75).
 The place values after the decimal point are:
o Tenths (0.1)
o Hundredths (0.01)
o Thousandths (0.001)

2. Reading and Writing Decimals

 Example: 5.642 is read as "five and six hundred forty-two thousandths."

 Example: 0.09 is read as "nine hundredths."

3. Comparing and Ordering Decimals

 Compare decimals by looking at digits from left to right.

 Add zeros if needed to make the numbers have the same number of decimal places.
o Example: Compare 0.6 and 0.58 → Rewrite as 0.60 and 0.58 → 0.6 is greater.

4. Rounding Decimals

 Look at the digit to the right of the rounding place.

o If it is 5 or greater, round up.
o If it is 4 or lower, round down.
 Example: Round 3.478 to the nearest tenth → 3.5

5. Adding and Subtracting Decimals

 Align the decimal points before adding or subtracting.

 Add zeros to make the numbers equal in length if needed.
 Example:

2.45
+ 3.7
--------
6.15

6. Multiplying Decimals

 Ignore the decimal points and multiply as whole numbers.

 Count the total number of decimal places in both numbers.
 Place the decimal in the answer accordingly.
 Example: 0.3 × 0.5 → 3 × 5 = 15 → Answer = 0.15

7. Dividing Decimals

 If dividing by a decimal, move the decimal to the right to make it a whole number (do
the same to the dividend).
 Divide as normal.
 Example: 4.5 ÷ 0.5 → Convert to 45 ÷ 5 → Answer: 9

8. Converting Between Fractions and Decimals

 To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

o Example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
 To convert a decimal to a fraction, write it as a fraction and simplify.
o Example: 0.6 = 6/10 = 3/5

9. Word Problems with Decimals

 Identify keywords (sum, difference, product, quotient).

 Make sure to align decimals properly in operations.
 Example: A watermelon weighs 3.75 kg, and another weighs 2.9 kg. What is their total
weight?

3.75
+ 2.90
--------
6.65 kg
